This Week's Topic: How to correctly read a putt

You can have a technically correct putting stroke but if you don't know how to read a putt you will never be a good putter. Great putters study the line, they see the ball rolling to the hole. Let me show you how to read a putt. When you walk up to the green, check to see where the low spot of the green is. That's actually the direction the ball is going to break. The low side on this particular hole is to the left so I know that the ball will roll from right to left. I have also noticed that the putt is a little bit down hill so it will be a little bit faster.

Then I get down behind the ball and I try to figure out how the ball is going to roll to the hole and I'm going to pick out a spot on that line where I think the ball is going to turn and drop into the hole. I am going to call that the apex of the line. That's actually where I am aiming to when I set up over the ball not to the hole. So when I get up over the ball I am aiming to the apex which is to the right because this ball is going to go right to left so I am to that spot and if I hit that spot with the correct speed the ball should top into the hole.

So practice reading greens just like you would any part of your game.
