Real-Time Scoring

If you are looking for a “peek under the tent” to learn a little bit more about the LPGA Tour and its players, The LPGA Insider is for you. Every couple of weeks we will post some of the latest news and Tour tidbits to hit the airwaves. This column is exclusive to LPGA.com so remember, you have to be here to read it here (does that make sense?)! Whatever. You catch my drift. So, without further delay, let's get to it!

The LPGA is back in Alabama this week. We're just outside of Montgomery in the town of Prattville. This week starts the final stretch of tournaments for the fall and before you know it the season will be over. Oh how time flies when you're having fun.

Everything has been great this week. From the weather to the food, it couldn't get any better. So here are your insider tidbits for the week. I hope you enjoy.

Birdies for Charity

Officials for this week's Navistar LPGA Classic Presented by MaxxForce are hoping to raise $40,000 through Birdies for Charity, a week-long fundraising program designed to assist local charities and community organizations in the Prattville, Ala., area. Donors can pledge $.01 or more for each birdie made, or a flat donation of $10 or more, to a participating charity or organization.

There were 1,301 birdies made during the inaugural Navistar LPGA Classic last year, which is hosted on The Senator at Capitol Hill on the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail. The donor with the closest guess to the 2008 birdie total for the tournament will win a three-day, two-night stay at any resort on the RTJ Golf Trail.

I'll keep a running total all week. Click here to make a donation.>>

Louise Friberg to play in final group

Rookie Louise Friberg entered new territory today playing in the final group. She won earlier in the year at the MasterCard Classic but it was a come from behind win so she didn't know what it was like to be at the top of the leaderboard going into the final round.

Q. Are you nervous or excited at all about playing possibly with Lorena tomorrow?
LOUISE FRIBERG: Excited. Excited. Whoever I'm going to play with tomorrow, it's going to be exciting. I'm just excited to be in the top going into Sunday, no matter who is in the top with me. Obviously I have a lot to learn from watching Lorena play, but I also need to focus on my own game.

So tomorrow, it's about my game and hopefully have a good time out there.

Q. What will you do tonight?
LOUISE FRIBERG: I'm going to go out and have a good dinner with some friends, maybe read my new book. That's it, very exciting. Life on Tour (laughing).

Q. I'll bite. What's the book?
LOUISE FRIBERG: Well, it's being delivered to me in a few minutes, so I don't know the name of it yet.

Q. What genre?
LOUISE FRIBERG: (Laughing) I don't know. I think it's fiction. It's like girly. It's a girly book, like a little bit of love, a little bit of friends, people, maybe some shopping, just a girly book.

So now for the inside scoop. The book Louise was talking about is called Swapping Lives by Jane Green. How do I know? Because I'm the one who delivered it to her. We've started our own little book club this week and in return I got another Jane Green book to read from Louise. I hope she's enjoyed it so far.

Are you ready for some football?

Nicole Hage was ready to cheer on her Auburn Tigers on Saturday during the third round. I saw her at breakfast and she was decked out in Auburn gear. She was rooting her Tigers on while at work on the golf course. I bet the locals loved it.

Navistar Trucks

The course this week is decorated with Navistar trucks. Two trucks were near the clubhouse this week. One is a an old timey looking truck and the other is an Army vehicle called a MRAP (pictured below). Jill McGill knew all about the MRAP from her recent visit to Iraq.

McGill said, "It was funny pulling up to the clubhouse and seeing the big trucks and I thought “that's an MRAP.” Had I not been to Iraq, I would not have known. It's a great vehicle that Navistar makes and we were fortunate to have the troops give us a ride around. The troops over there really seem to like the MRAP and they were very excited to show us the features and what the vehicle could do."

Other trucks you'll see around the course are actually the tee markers this week. Each tee box has a set of miniature trucks marking off the teeing area for the players. I heard that some are dump trucks and one is a truck with a crane. I think this is the most inventive tee marker I've seen yet.

Janice Moodie's Highlight this week

The thing Janice Moodie was looking forward to this week was not golf but the premier of Grey's Anatomy. After the first round, Janice was T4 at six-under and when asked what her goals were for the second round all she could talk about was getting through Grey's Anatomy that night. After the second round Janice found herself in the lead and during her interview we were pleased to hear that she was able to watch Grey's Anatomy even though her son was being a "stinker" during the first hour.

Tune in to Golf Channel

Vicki Goetze-Ackerman
Karen Stupples

This week Golf Channel is having two special guests walk the fairways on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Vicki Goetze-Ackerman will be hitting the fairways after her round to provide commentary for the first round airing. Karen Stupples will be doing the same on Friday after her round. What a special treat. Karen Stupples was very excited for this opportunity so be sure to tune in and hear what they have to say.

I also heard that Vicki Goetze-Ackerman will be doing this again during the Longs Drugs Challenge.

Voted Best Food on Tour

And who voted. Well I did and I'm the one writing this so my vote is the only one that matters. I am proclaiming this week as being the Best Food on Tour. It couldn't get anymore southern than this and I love southern home cooking. Breakfast is a mixture of eggs, breakfast casserole, grits, bacon, sausage, and biscuits and gravy. Now that is how you get the day started off right.

Tuesday's lunch was barbeque. I'm a pretty picky barbeque eater but this was good. Apart from the huge salad bar that included many different cold salads, there was baby back ribs, chicken breasts, mac-n-cheese, and rolls with butter. Wednesday they did a whole creole buffet that included a gumbo pasta, chicken breast, and shrimp and grits. Sound good. I haven't even gotten to the best part yet, the dessert table.

There are so many desserts to choose from I never know what to get. I decided that each day I would taste something different. My options are raspberry cheesecake, banana pudding, carrot cake, chocolate pie, and brownies. I've had three of the five selections so far and they are to die for. I'll try and get a picture tomorrow to make everyone jealous.

Junior Clinic

Area fourth graders got a special treat on Tuesday when five LPGA pros and Eric Eshleman, the head pro at Birmingham Country Club, put on a junior clinic like no other. Anna Grzebien, Nicole Hage, Kim Hall, Angela Jerman, and Kim Welch helped the host Eric perform trick shots for the kids. Around 1,000 kids were in attendance and they were in awe of what these pros could do. The highlight of the clinic had to be when Kim Hall wore a Nebraska football helmet that was adorned with balloons. It was all part of Eric's trick. She was a great sport. They all did a great job showing the kids in attendance a good time. Click here to see the photo gallery >>
