Hollis Stacy drives in Presidential motorcade

On Tuesday, February 17, President Barack Obama traveled to the mile-high city of Denver to sign the Stimulus Bill into law. That kind of high profile political announcement takes intense "on the ground" coordination between the president's staff and Denver city officials. Hundreds of volunteers must be found to help with the planning, preparation and execution of such an important event. On this particular day, former LPGA player and three-time U.S. Women's Open champion Hollis Stacy was called upon by the Obama staff to assist with the motorcade. Hollis shared her thoughts with us about being part of this historical day.

"It was very coincidental that I got a call from the White House to help drive in the motorcade last Tuesday. My latest project has me very busy trying to bring a 'green' golf event to Colorado in the area (north of Denver) where part of the money from the stimulus package will fund projects like solar and wind power as well as better ways to utilize natural gas.

"I was Barack Obama's precinct captain in Lakewood, Colo., during the spring caucus. During the Democratic Convention I worked in transportation, meeting people at the airport and putting them into their cars. I was able to meet most of the "heavy hitters" and they all were extremely gracious.

"Tuesday was an intense day, but nothing that I couldn't handle. I was part of the motorcade bringing in the camera crew. We were screened early, before we were on the tarmac, which meant we were not able to leave the van basically all day.

"The highlight for me, as was true in the convention, was seeing the faces. As I was driving, the crowds were smiling and waving American flags at me. I wanted to honk my van's horn but the Secret Service fellow next to me didn't look too cheery about the idea.

"I met the President and Vice President. The President is better looking in person than on TV. The Vice President is always photogenic with his great smile. They both had great handshakes. I wished them safe travels and the President thanks me.

"My day was thrilling. I count my blessings."
