Buoyed by two comeback wins, the U.S. Team scores 20 points
RYE, NH, May 21, 2011 – The U.S. Team takes a strong lead in the first round of the 2011 Handa Cup presented by Hannaford and Kraft Foods with two come-from-behind victories to secure a 16 point overnight lead at Wentworth By The Sea Country Club. The World Team’s four points were scored by Dibos/Neumann who played Hall of Famers Bradley/Sheehan and won 4 and 2.
U.S. Team’s Daniel/Johnson sunk a must-make putt on Hole 18 to force a sudden death playoff with Coe-Jones/Harvey, both from Canada, on Hole 1. Coe-Jones/Harvey were not able to answer in the playoff and lost the hole and the match. Scranton/Rarick, Mallon/Lopez, Steinhauer/Jones all won their matches outright for the U.S. Today’s first nine holes were four ball; the final nine holes were modified foursomes. Tomorrow’s singles matches were announced following the round. They are available here.
The Handa Cup, an International Sports Marketing Society (ISPS) Series Event, is title sponsored by Haruhisa Handa, a Japanese philanthropist, artist and businessman who founded the ISPS in 2006.
