I know, I know, it's been forever since I've updated my rookie blog. I know my readers (aka Mom, Dad, Grandma, Scruffy, etc.) have just been dying to know what's been going on since I last updated everyone.
Well, it's been a whirlwind. Aside from the occasional lost key, stubbed toe, and awkward moment, I've escaped almost the whole season relatively unscathed.
Oh yeah, and a minor detail: I PLAYED WITH LAURA DAVIES LAST WEEK!
Yeah, it was pretty awesome. During the second round of the Safeway Classic in Oregon, I was paired with Laura Davies and Ji Young Oh. I watched LD warm-up (don't worry, I tried to get a warm-up of my own in) for all of 10 minutes. After a few putts, I followed her to the first tee and as she pounded the ground and constructed her mini mole-hill to place her ball on, I knew I was in for a treat.
All I can say is: Magical.
She was amazing to play with, but I think the highlight of the day was our final hole (the ninth hole), which was an almost no brainer lay-up hole, with a creek cutting through the fairway, hazard left, and internal OB stakes placed all along the right.
I thought: "Perhaps an iron off the tee? Hybrid maybe?" PSH.
"Johnny," she said, "How many balls we got in the bag?"
"Oh, we've got at least seven" was her caddy's reply.
She scoffed and grabbed her driver, nuked one right down the neck of the landing area, and had a measly wedge into a difficult par-4.
If you read her Wikipedia page (which I did), sure, you'll find a laundry list of her accomplishments, tournaments won, and records set. But the episode on our eighteenth hole could only sum her up in one word, preferably voiced by Barney Stinson: "Legen-(wait for it)-dary!"
