A look at some of the top player picks for the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first major championship of the 2013 LPGA season which begins Thursday at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.:

Top 3:
  - Stacy Lewis: In the midst of rising from No. 9 to No. 1 in the world over the last year, Lewis has accomplished just about everything … except winning a major championship. Lewis had three top-eight finishes in the four majors last year on the way to a Rolex Player of the Year season. She has three top-10 finishes in five starts at Mission Hills and won her only major title there in a 2011 final-round showdown with Yani Tseng, which leads to …

  - Yani Tseng: Tseng has gone from being the most dominant golfer in the world to a player on the rebound in less than a year. When she was disqualified for missing her pro-am two weeks ago at the Kia Classic, it may have been the low point. She could be the three-time defending champion this week, with a 2010 win, a 2011 runner-up and a third last year – the last two while leading entering the final round. So familiarity breeds confidence for Tseng.

  - Beatriz Recari: The Kraft Nabisco title has recently been for those on the rise as it was the first major championship victory for three of the last four winners (Brittany Lincicome in 2009, Lewis in 2011 and Sun Young Yoo last year). That fits Recari, who has been the second-best player so far in 2013, including a playoff victory at the Kia Classic two weeks ago. She has mirrored that rise with improvement at Mission Hills from a cut in 2011 to a T26 last year that ended with weekend rounds of 70-69.

Darkhorse:
  - Jessica Korda. The Rancho Mirage, Calif., area should be familiar ground for Korda. Her father, Petr, lost to Pete Sampras in a five-set tennis final in nearby Indian Wells 19 years ago. Korda’s comfort with her golf game is also revealing as she has two top-10 finishes and is second on the LPGA in birdies this season.
