Paula Creamer Opens Her Bag
Paula Creamer, otherwise known as the "Pink Panther", captured the 65th U.S. Women's Open at Oakmont Country Club for her first major championship victory. The 23-year old entered the final round with a three stroke lead and never looked back. A near flawless final-round 69 left Creamer four ahead of the charging Na Yeon Choi and Rolex Rankings No. 4 Suzann Pettersen. Creamer's win total on the LPGA Tour is now nine. Creamer is no stranger to top finishes at the U.S. Women's Open. Since 2004, Creamer has finished no worse than tied for 19th in the tournament, with ties for sixth in 2008 and 2009. Her previous best finish at an LPGA Major was a tie for third at the 2009 Women's British Open and a tie for third at the 2005 LPGA Championship.
Creamer had only played in four LPGA tournaments prior to this week's U.S. Women's Open. She was sidelined during the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand for a thumb injury. Creamer underwent surgery on March 30th for hyperextension of the metacarpal phalangeal joint caused by stretched ligaments in her left thumb. Creamer's previous best finish in the 2010 season was a seventh place showing at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
After persistent rehab and extensive dedication Creamer returned to action to find herself in a different mindset. Finding herself no longer able to hit knock down shots or shape the ball like she did prior to surgery, Creamer was forced to play within herself and remain patient. The fighter in Creamer was on full display this week at Oakmont Country Club.
