Alexis Thompson and Joanna Coe will join this year’s field.
Galloway, NJ (May 3, 2011) — When the ShopRite LPGA Classic plays May 30 – June 5 on the historic Bay Course at Seaview – A Dolce Resort (which is now owned by nearby Richard Stockton College of New Jersey), the field of 150 will include three sponsor exemptions, including Alexis Thompson and Joanna Coe. The third and final exemption will be announced at a later date.
“We have a tremendous field of players which already includes 98 of the top 100 players on the LPGA’s current money list,” said Tim Erensen, Tournament Executive Director. “Alexis and Joanna both bring great story lines to the event and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they both were in the hunt come Sunday afternoon.”
Thompson returns to Atlantic City one year after making her professional debut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic as a 15-year-old, missing the cut in 2010 by just four strokes. Now 16, Thompson has had great success on the LPGA Tour, including a tie for second place last July at the Evian Masters, only one stroke behind the winner, and also a 10 finish at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open.
Coe, a Mays Landing native and Oakcrest High School graduate, is one of the country’s top amateur players as a senior at Rollins College in Florida. At last year’s tournament, she shot an impressive three-under par 68 to win the tournament qualifier. Although she failed to make the cut, she was a crowd favorite and plans to make her professional debut this year at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
The 54-hole official event will offer a $1.5 million purse and will be televised live on the Golf Channel.
