Gladstone, N.J. – Tournament officials announced today that LPGA Tour favorites Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer have committed to playing in the 2011 Sybase Match Play Championship. Wie and Creamer, ranked 9th and 10th in the world golf rankings, respectively, will join the best female golfers in the world as they battle head-to-head at Hamilton Farm Golf Club, May 19 – 22 in the LPGA Tour’s only match play tournament.
"I'm looking forward to going back to Hamilton Farm,” said Creamer. “It will be such a great tune up for The Solheim Cup. I have a great relationship with Sybase and such great memories of winning my first LPGA event with them as the sponsor."
Creamer carded her first LPGA Tour career victory at the 2005 Sybase Classic when it was a stroke play event. She has seen additional success at Sybase-sponsored events in the past, finishing T3 with Michelle Wie in 2009. Wie reached the Sybase Match Play Championship quarterfinals in 2010 before being eliminated by world #1 Jiyai Shin.
“I'm looking forward to the Sybase Match Play Championship,” said Wie. “Last year I made the quarterfinals and this year my goal is to make it much further. I can't wait to be back in the greater New York area."
Creamer is a seven-year veteran on the LPGA Tour, recording nine career victories, including one major championship at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open. By winning the Sybase Classic in 2005, four days before graduating high school, Creamer became the youngest winner of a multi–round event in LPGA history. Creamer has gotten off to a fast start in 2011, recording two top-10 finishes in five events, including a runner-up finish at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup in March.
While Wie is only in her third year on the LPGA Tour, she has already recorded two victories and numerous top-10 finishes. She last won at the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open. Wie was the youngest person to ever qualify for an LPGA Tour event when she Monday qualified for the 2002 LPGA Takefuji Classic at the age of 12. Wie has played well in 2011, with two top-6 finishes including a runner-up finish at the Honda LPGA Thailand Open.
