Kerr Extends Lead in U.S. Solheim Cup point race

With a second major in the span of three weeks, American players once again had a chance to pick up double points in the U.S. Solheim Cup race during last week’s U.S. Women’s Open. And as time starts to tick down until the team is announced following the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola in August, a few players were able to take advantage of the additional points.

A third place finish at the U.S. Women’s Open helped Cristie Kerr extend her commanding lead in the point race. Kerr earned 56 points this past week thanks to her finish. Kerr’s leading point total is now up to 726 points while Morgan Pressel sits in second place with 423.5 points.

Angela Stanford jumped up to third in the U.S. Solheim Cup points race, as her fourth-place finish earned her 54 points to now sit at 410 points, and Paula Creamer’s 15th place finish helped her to maintain the No. 4 spot at 395.5 points. Stacy Lewis sits in fifth with 383.5 points. Michelle Wie (358), Brittany Lincicome (338.5), Brittany Lang (210.5), Juli Inkster (188.5) and Christina Kim (150.5) round out the current top-10.

There is still time for players to make a push in the race. Nine players are currently within 100 points of Kim. Four total tournaments, including the RICOH Women’s British Open which will also feature double points, remain for players to earn points before the team is announced following the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola. U.S. Captain Rosie Jones will add two captain's picks to the 10 points qualifiers to round of the 12 player team that will take on Alison Nicholas and the Europeans, Sept. 23-25, 2011 at Killeen Castle in Ireland.
