Fiona Puyo Leads LPGA Qualifying Tournament

Symetra Tour member Fiona Puyo fired a first-round 7-under par 65 to take the lead at the second stage of the 2012 Qualifying Tournament.

With play split between the Plantation Golf and Country Club Bobcat and Panther Courses, Puyo opened on the Panther Course where she capitalized on the scoreable par-5’s to card eight birdies and one bogey.

“I was able to put the ball very close to the pin and was able to make the putts,” said Puyo. “I played on Panther and went for three par-5’s and was able to make birdies by reaching them in two. Everything went well, I would say.”

The Epernay, France native got off to a fast start on Tuesday with a birdie at the par-4 first. She then went on to record birdies at the par-4 sixth and par-5 ninth to make the turn at three-under par.

Puyo’s impressive played continued on the back-nine as she followed-up a birdie on the par-3 11th with four consecutive birdies on numbers 13, 14, 15, and 16.

“I allowed myself to be aggressive for the next holes,” said Puyo of her four consecutive birdies. “I didn’t even realize I made four birdies in a row.”

Puyo attributed her impressive first round play to knowledge she gained from last year’s second stage which was also played at the Plantation Golf and Country Club.

“The fact that I had a year of experience I could tell I had a more aggressive take on the Panther Course. On the par-5’s you can really play aggressive and get awarded.”

The 25-year old recently completed her second year on the Symetra Tour where she posted three top-20 finishes including a season-best tied for 10th at the Tate & Lyle Players Championship. Puyo cemented her spot on next year’s Symetra Tour by finishing 83rd on the season-ending money list which took some of the pressure of this week’s nerve racking second stage.

“The fact that I had a year of experience I could tell I had a more aggressive take on the Panther Course. On the par-5’s you can really play aggressive and get awarded.”

Puyo heads into tomorrow’s second-round with a two-stroke lead over fellow Symetra Tour member Taylor Karle and amateur Marita Engzelius.

The top 70 and ties on Friday will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.

The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2013 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive Symetra Tour status.

Of Note… Moriya Jutanugarn, who won the first stage of Qualifying School, opened with a first-round 1-under par on the Panther Course and currently sits in a tie for 25th. Four-time winner on the Ladies European Tour (LET) and member of the victorious 2011 European Solheim Cup Team, Melissa Reid fired a first-round 3-under par on the Bobcat and stands tied for 10th.
