So Yeon Ryu, an award-winning rookie year

Entering the 2012 season, South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu had her eye on the 2012 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year prize. She not only achieved this feat, but did so in extraordinary fashion.

The 22-year-old gathered 16 top-10 finishes in 24 events which includes her victory at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic in August. She also ranks inside the top-10 in seven categories including top-10 finish percentage, birdies, putts per GIR, rounds in the 60’s, scoring average, rounds under par and eagles. Not to mention she also broke into the top-10 of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, rounding out the season at No. 7.

Ryu got off to a hot start in the rookie race this season and didn’t give the other 32 rookies the slightest chance of catching her either. She ended the season with 1,448 points and a 63-point lead over Lexi Thompson. She becomes the eighth South Korean golfer on the LPGA Tour to win the award.

“I had a great experience this year on the LPGA,” Ryu said. “Maybe it will be a little easier to prepare for next season because I know what I have to do. I’m the Rookie of the Year so I’m sure everybody’s expectation level will increase again. So that may put a lot of pressure on me but I can handle it.”
