LPGA Legends to compete for first time in Maine in Hannaford community event

(PORTLAND, May 16, 2012) - The Legends Tour, official tour for LPGA professionals age 45 and over, along with Hannaford Supermarkets, hosted a Media Day this morning at Falmouth Country Club to announce details of the upcoming Hannaford Community Challenge, presented by Kraft Foods. Legends Tour CEO and 27-time LPGA Tour champion Jane Blalock was joined by 2011 Solheim Cup Captain and five-time Legends Tour winner Rosie Jones to share perspective on this inaugural tournament - and the first of its kind in the state of Maine.

"I'm super excited to be coming to beautiful Portland, Maine to play in the Hannaford Community Challenge and help raise money for the charities involved," said Jones, a 13-time champion on the LPGA Tour who recently won The Legends Tour's season-opener held in the greater Phoenix area. "Having won that first event in Arizona may give me a little bit of an advantage, but the depth and talent on the Legends Tour doesn't let you rest on your laurels very long. I look forward to competing again with some of the best to play the game."

The Hannaford Community Challenge field will feature 40 Legends of the LPGA, including seven Hall of Famers: Amy Alcott, Pat Bradley, Donna Caponi, JoAnne Carner, Nancy Lopez, Patty Sheehan and Hollis Stacy. Blalock said, "This is the most prestigious event to be played in the state of Maine. The LPGA Legends are thrilled to be taking to the tees at Falmouth Country Club in June as it will surely present an interesting challenge for all the great shot-makers on our Tour."

Blalock is slated to play in the tournament, her second competitive appearance this season. "With The Legends Tour's limited roping policy and incredibly congenial players, this will be an entertaining and truly engaging fan experience," she added.

"The Hannaford Community Challenge is a family event that allows us to see some of the world's greatest women golfers compete right here in Maine," said Hannaford Supermarkets President Beth Newlands Campbell. "Hannaford Supermarkets is particularly proud that the tournament will generate significant contributions to local charities and offer mentoring opportunities for young people," she added.

Event dates are set for June 21-24 and include a one-day pro-am and two days of Legends competition. The first round of play on Saturday will also feature area junior golfers from The First Tee of Maine program in each professional pairing. Twenty girls and boys will tee it up alongside the professionals and play 18 holes in their own mini-tournament while the Legends post their first round scores. Final round play will feature the Legends exclusively as they vie for the $30,000 winner's check and an official Legends Tour championship.

"Falmouth has always been highly regarded as a competitive golf venue, and we believe we're going to see an exciting contest played by true 'legends' of the game," said Jason Harris, General Manager of Falmouth. "But this is about more than just our club. It's a testament to the unique quality of golf that only the state of Maine can offer."

Charities supported by the Hannaford Community Challenge, presented by Kraft Foods include The First Tee of Maine, Good Shepherd Food Bank and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine. All of the ticket proceeds support the charities, and fans have an opportunity at purchase to specify which charity they would like to support. Tickets are $10 each and available on-line at thelegendstour.com/tickets or at the gate on tournament days.

"Hannaford has always been a big friend to youth in our community," said Sam Beal, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine. "We are honored to be a beneficiary of the Hannaford Community Challenge, the latest example of their commitment to kids."

Blalock announced the field to date, which does not include the local qualifier to be determined on Wednesday of tournament week.
