LPGA Momentum Continues: Television Coverage, Viewership and Web Numbers Continue on Double-Digit Pace
Last three tournaments rank in top-10 of most-watched telecasts over past five years
DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, May 3, 2012 – Coming off a 2011 season that featured a nearly 40 percent increase in television viewership of North American events, the LPGA announced a 2012 season that featured expanded television hours, live weekend coverage at every domestic event and four more official LPGA tournaments. The LPGA today announced that television viewership of North American events in 2012 is up 18 percent versus 2011 as the Tour begins the core of its domestic schedule.
“We are excited to see our fanbase continue to grow both on television and on the web,” said LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan. “Together with Golf Channel, we are working hard at innovative ways to showcase our players and their personalities. The LPGA’s growing fanbase is evidence that we’re moving in the right direction and we’ll continue to look for new ways to deliver to the fans.”
The Kraft Nabisco Championship (third), the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic (eighth) and the LPGA LOTTE Championship Presented by J Golf (10th) – all of which were broadcast in high definition – each ranked in the top-10 of the most-viewed LPGA tournaments since 2008. Additionally, last week’s Mobile Bay LPGA Classic was the fourth-highest viewed non-major tournament since 2006.
Increased viewership in 2012 is also attributable to more live coverage and increased hours of programming on Golf Channel, more high definition telecasts, more player profile features and testing innovative approaches toward telecasts including a Wednesday to Saturday format at the LPGA LOTTE Championship. Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome and Christina Kim also put their stamp on the Kia Classic telecast by serving as camera operator, producer and on-air host in one of the year’s highest rated telecasts.
Traffic to the LPGA’s website is also on the rise since the re-launch of LPGA.com prior to the Kraft Nabisco Championship. The Kraft Nabisco Championship and the LPGA LOTTE Championship Presented by J Golf each ranked as two of the top-four tournaments in terms of traffic in LPGA.com history. More than 1.4 million unique visitors experienced LPGA.com during the Kraft Nabisco, a 92 percent increase over 2011.
Page views for the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic were up 37 percent over 2011, while unique visitors increased by 85 percent. The revitalized website enhances the user experience with more robust tournament, sponsor and player content and statistics, and elevated integration of social media across multiple platforms.
The 2012 LPGA season has featured exciting storylines including three wins by Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng, victories by Americans Jessica Korda, Angela Stanford and Stacy Lewis, a thrilling final round at the Kraft Nabisco Championship won by Sun Young Yoo in a playoff, and a win by Japanese star Ai Miyazato in Hawaii.
The Tour returns to action this month with consecutive events in New Jersey – the Sybase Match Play Championship and the ShopRite LPGA Championship – before returning to Rochester, NY for the Wegmans LPGA Championship, the second major championship of the season, in June.
