Portland, Maine, June 24 - Sherri Turner fired a final round 67 to run away with the inaugural Hannaford Community Challenge at Falmouth Country Club. Turner birdied four holes on the front and picked up two more birdies against one bogey on the back to coast to a four shot win over her nearest competitors, Rosie Jones and Val Skinner, who finished 2 under.
Jones sunk a 30-foot putt on the final hole to tie Skinner for runner-up.
"I can't begin to tell you how excited I am," said Turner, who last won on The Legends Tour in 2008 when teamed with Cindy Figg-Currier in the BJ's Charity Championship. "It's been a long struggle with my game and I knew it was there, but I just couldn't seem to bring it to the course."
"I made four birdies on the front and then another birdie on 10, and I really felt like when I birdied that hole that I was going to be in control of what happened today," added Turner.
Turner thanked Hannaford and Kraft Foods for making the event possible. Hannaford raised $90,000 for charity, presenting $30,000 checks each to Good Shepherd Food Bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine and The First Tee of Maine. Senior Vice President of Merchandising Tod Pepin said, "We were proud to bring these great Legends of the game to the state of Maine and our community and to be able to support these important charities." Hannaford plans to award an additional $10,000 bonus to the charity responsible for the most ticket sales.
Nearly 4,000 fans came out to watch the Legends take on Falmouth Country Club's tight fairways and challenging greens.
