First-round wrap

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Ohio State’s Rachel Rohanna shot a 7-under par 65 on Tuesday to take the first-round lead at the first stage of the 2012 LPGA Qualifying Tournament. The Waynesburg, Pa. native recorded a bogey-free day with seven birdies on LPGA International’s Legends Course to take a two-shot lead over Americans Lalita Patipaksiri and Kim Welch and Spain’s Marta Silva.

Rohanna, a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection (2010, 2012) for the Buckeyes, said she was mostly concentrating on adapting to some new conditions this week.

“I knew I didn’t have any experience here before so I just wanted to get down here and get used to the Bermuda grass and the weather and keep playing like I’ve been playing,” said Rohanna. “I hit the ball really well. I just kept it simple: fairways and greens.”

It may be easier said than done and Rohanna admitted to some reoccurring luck that appeared on most of the greens during her round on Tuesday.

“I don’t know if it was luck but I had the same exact putt every hole,” said Rohanna. “A lot of 10-15 footers, right to left.”

Patitaksiri, Welch and Silva all carded 5-under par 67 on the Champions Course and sit two shots back and are tied for second heading into Wednesday’s second round.

Former Belmont Abbey College golfer Michele Low shot 4-under par 68 for solo fifth.

Of note…2012 U.S. Amateur finalist Jaye Marie Green shot a 2-under par 70 and sits in a tie for 12th…2012 NCAA runner-up and U.S. Curtis Cup team member Brooke Pancake opened with a 1-under par 71…recent SunCoast Series winner Cheyenne Woods shot a 5-over par 77.

On to the next one: The field will be cut to the top-70 players and ties following Wednesday’s second round. The top-60 players and ties following four rounds of play will advance into the Qualifying Stage II. That 72-hole event will be held Oct. 9-12, at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties from Stage II will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.

The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive Symetra Tour status.
