VENICE, FLORIDA, October 10, 2013 – North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson continued her hot streak in Venice, Fla. at Stage II LPGA Qualifying Tournament and fired a 4-under 68 to take the solo lead heading into the final round. Anderson moved to 12-under for the tournament and leads Davie, Fla. native Taylor Collins, 17-year-old from China Xiyu Lin and San Diego, Calif. native Maiya Tanaka by four strokes.
Anderson carded six birdies and two bogeys on the Panther course at Plantation Golf and Country Club. She got off to a blazing start with birdies on two of the first three holes. Her first bogey of the day came on the par-4 5th hole but quickly recovered with another birdie on the par-4 6th hole to make the turn at 2-under. Anderson was on her way to finishing at 5-under for the day with three more birdies, but fell to 4-under after a bogey on the final hole. Anderson says a 68 is nothing to complain about.
“I’m thrilled to have played well this week so far,” said Anderson. “Once again, the putts really went in today. I had a lot of really good birdie putts but no tap-ins today. It was just solid all around; I had two bogeys but lots of birdies so I can’t complain.”
The 21-year-old is no stranger to contending in competition as Anderson won 20 collegiate titles while a member of the Bison women’s golf team. While Anderson is competing among the strongest field of amateur and professional golfers, she says she entered this week with the same mindset as she did during collegiate competition.
“I pretty much go into every round with the same mindset,” said Anderson. “I try to figure out exactly what I’m going to think on my swing, what I’m going to think on my putting stroke. Obviously, I’d love another solid round like I’ve had all week. But I just want to finish it off strong.”
Currently tied for second with a three-day total of 8-under 208 include Golf Channel’s Big Break Mexico winner Taylor Collins, China’s Xiyu Lin and UCLA walk-on Maiya Tanaka. Second-round co-leader Jenny Suh shot 1-over 73 to sit at fifth place and five-strokes behind the leader.
The final round of Stage II LPGA Qualifying Tournament will begin at 8:00 a.m. with groups teeing off on the first and tenth tees of both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club with the leaders teeing off at 1:05 p.m. Players will be re-paired based on their score and the course played on Thursday. Groups will switch courses for Friday’s final round with the leaders teeing off on the Bobcat course.
The top 80 and ties after Friday’s final round will advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, which is set for December 4-8 on both the Jones and Hills courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2014 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive status on the Symetra Tour.
