Battle for No. 1 between Park, Stacy Lewis
hits primetime this week beginning Wednesday on Golf Channel
DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, April 15, 2013 – The next battle for Rolex Rankings No. 1 has officially begun following Inbee Park’s ascension to the top spot today. Entering the LPGA LOTTE Championship Presented by J Golf, Park (9.28) holds a .04 average point lead over American Stacy Lewis (9.24), who held the No. 1 spot for the past four weeks.
“This is a very big day in my golf career,” Park said. “I’m so happy to share it with my family who are here in Hawaii with me. It’s nice to reach this goal, but I know a lot of players are close to No. 1. It gives me something else to play for every week and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Park, who won the 2013 Kraft Nabisco Championship, becomes the eighth player to hold the top spot on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings since their inception in 2006. Park also won the Honda LPGA Thailand in February. Last season, she recorded two victories, 10 additional top-10 finishes and six runner-up finishes en route to winning the Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average.
Despite an offweek on the LPGA Tour, Park was able to overtake Lewis because of the rolling 104-week rolling points timetable where points are weighted in favor of the most recent 52 weeks and more heavily over the most recent 13 weeks. The Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings do not stop calculating simply because the LPGA has an offweek. Projections for next week’s Rolex Rankings will be available later this week.
Park is the eighth player to hold the No. 1 spot on the Rolex Rankings following Annika Sorenstam (60 weeks), Lorena Ochoa (158 weeks), Jiyai Shin (26 weeks), Ai Miyazato (11 weeks), Cristie Kerr (5 weeks), Yani Tseng (109 weeks) and Stacy Lewis (4 weeks).
