KIAWAH ISLAND, SC., June 12, 2013 – The second annual LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Team Championship at The Kiawah Island Club finished up today with the team of Mary Janiga from Wellington, FL and Megan Turnquest, from Loxahatchee, FL as the champions of the Bell-McIntyre division.  The pair scored a 69 and a 71 for a two-day total of 140, ten strokes better than their nearest competitors on the very challenging River Course.

As the winners of the Bell-McIntire division, Janiga and Turnquest will have their names inscribed on the Bell-McIntire perpetual trophy, honoring former USGA President Judy Bell and two-time U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Barbara McIntire, two pioneers for girls’ golf.  LPGA Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame member, Nancy Lopez, was on site to present the trophy to the winning teams.

The River Course at Kiawah Island Club provided a major championship stage for the two-day competition. The LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Team Championship is a 36-hole team competition with girls placed into three “divisions” based on age and ability. 

The winners in the Sandy LaBauve division, named after Girls Golf Founder LPGA Teaching Professional Sandy LaBauve were Hannah Foster of Hobe Sound, FL and Haylie Turnquest of Loxahatchee, FL with a two day total of 145. First day leaders Jaclyn Kenzel of Southern Pines, NC and Caroline Rea of Pinehurst, NC finished second with a two-day total of 149.  

Haley Quickel of Middleton, DE and Essie Rike of Myrtle Beach, SC were the winners of the Vicky Hurst division after firing a two-day total of 174 over the challenging River course. A former Girls Golf alumnus, LPGA Tour Professional Vicky Hurst, is the 2013 National Ambassador for the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program.

Thanks to money raised by the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup and Kiawah Island Club members, many of the girls have been awarded grants, helping to make this event accessible and affordable for all girls.

The leaders in the Sandy Labauve division, named after Girls Golf Founder LPGA Teaching Professional Sandy Labauve are Jaclyn Kenzel from Southern Pines, NC and Caroline Rea from Pinehurst, NC who scored a one under par 71 today. Close on their heels with an even par 72 are Alice Hodge of Larchmont, NY and Kennedy Anne Noe from Knoxville, TN.

Haley Quickel of Middleton, DE and Essie Rike of Myrtle Beach, SC have an 8 shot lead in the Vicky Hurst division after firing an 81 over the challenging River course. LPGA Tour Professional Vicky Hurst (a former Girls Golf alumni) is the 2013 National Ambassador for the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program.
