LPGA to Focus on Player Development in 2014

T&CP and Symetra Tour Partner with ANNIKA Academy
to Mentor and Develop Golfers of All Levels

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., January 22, 2014 – The LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals (T&CP) division and the Symetra Tour today announced a three-year partnership with the ANNIKA Academy, LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame member Annika Sorenstam’s boutique golf instruction and fitness school. With the agreement, the Academy becomes an approved education provider for the LPGA T&CP and the official elite golf training academy for the Road to the LPGA. Through its partnership, the ANNIKA Academy, T&CP and the Symetra Tour will explore new ways to shape the future of women’s golf.

“The LPGA is a lot more than LPGA tournaments and international TV. It’s also about more than 1,500 members who work in the game – teaching, coaching, and improving golf facilities.  It’s also about young women on the Symetra Tour trying to hone their skills and make to the LPGA Tour,” said Commissioner Mike Whan. “Our goal is to provide the best possible resources and support to these women.  I can think of no one in the world more qualified to help these women achieve their dreams, than Annika Sorenstam.  She is an unbelievably strong addition, and our members are truly blessed to have her wisdom and guidance.”

“I am thrilled to have my Academy partner with the LPGA T&CP and the world’s best young professional women’s golfers on the Symetra Tour,” said Annika. “We look forward to sharing our ‘Winning Approach,’ which I utilized throughout my career, with their elite athletes as they prepare for successful careers on the LPGA Tour. It’s my goal to help grow the game of golf and I believe this partnership will do just that.”

Beginning in 2014, LPGA T&CP members will be able to participate in the Academy’s premier certification program, Bring 7. The program allows T&CP members who recruit and accompany seven paying students to attend multi-day golf training sessions conducted by an ANNIKA Academy instructor. The Academy is located at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Annika, a 72-time winner on the LPGA Tour from 1994-2008, will become an honorary LPGA T&CP member to commemorate her continuous efforts to help teach golfers the game and guide them on a path to success.

“We are excited to have the ANNIKA Academy as an LPGA approved education provider,” said Nancy Henderson LPGA Executive Director. “Our goal is to provide cutting edge continuing education for our LPGA instructors, and we know we have found a great partner in the ANNIKA Academy. We have over 1,500 certified LPGA teachers who are dedicated to helping golfers of all levels enjoy the game of golf more each day.”

The ANNIKA Academy will also join forces with the Symetra Tour this season to conduct player development sessions on-site at six Symetra Tour events, covering a range of elite training topics such as nutrition, fitness, course management and mental training. Annika herself will also host two Q&A Skype sessions, called Power Hours, with Symetra Tour members, as well as attend the Symetra Tour Championship.

The Symetra Tour will offer exemptions into eight of its scheduled events this season for select athletes from the ANNIKA Academy.

“With the Symetra Tour, our goal is to not only identify the next generation of LPGA stars, but to provide them the best chance of success once they graduate to the LPGA Tour,” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour. “By partnering with Annika and her team from the ANNIKA Academy, we are affording our players access to resources developed by one of the greatest players in LPGA Tour history.  And by improving the overall quality of play on the Symetra Tour, we are continuing to build the credibility of the Symetra Tour as the best place to start a successful LPGA Tour career.”

At the end of the 2014 season, the ANNIKA Academy will select one Symetra Tour member to receive the ANNIKA Academy Elite Athlete Award. The award will be given to the player who, through her performance in Symetra Tour events and her participation in the ANNIKA Academy development sessions, best demonstrates the same holistic “Winning Approach” philosophy,  which Annika applied to her game during competition. The player will receive a $5,000 cash prize.
