The second round of the Blue Bay LPGA was suspended at 12:19 p.m. local time due to unplayable conditions and called for the day at 2:30 p.m. Play will resume on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. With more heavy rain in the forecast on the weekend, the event has been reduced from 72 holes to 54 holes. The second round will be played on Saturday and the third and final round on Sunday.
The second-round tee times were delayed 2.5 hours on Friday morning and the first group completed six holes. The final two groups in the draw have yet to tee off in the second round.
Austin Ernst (through six holes), Yani Tseng (five holes) and Brittany Lincicome (four holes) fared well in their short time on the course in tough conditions on Friday. All three players were 2-under par on the day. Lincicome moved into a tie for eighth and is just two shots of the lead at 4-under par. Ernst and Tseng moved into a tie for 15th and are 3-under par.
Ernst said the track at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course held up noticeably well considering the amount of rain that fell on Friday morning which was approximately two inches.
“The course actually held a ton of water because we even got a ton of rain before we even started this morning,” said Ernst. “But you couldn’t really tell. I kept being aggressive because it was a little soft around the greens.”
Players waited about two hours during the suspension until play was called at 2:30 p.m.
“It was a pretty standard delay,” said Ernst. “Since we were that first group out, and it was a 30 minute delay every time, you just have to be ready. But then it was sit, eat, practice a little bit. Eat more then sit.”
Ernst sounded hopeful for course conditions on Saturday although the forecast calls for more rain.
“I have no idea what kind of drainage they have here but it’s obviously really good,” said Ernst. “We had to of had at least two inches. The greens were getting pretty wet once they called play.”
First-round leader Jessica Korda has yet to tee off in the second round and sits atop the leaderboard at 6-under par. A group of six players are tied for second and trail the lead by one shot.
