Joey Poh wins HSBC Women's Champions Local Qualifying Tournament once again

Singapore, 21 January 2010 - The winner of the HSBC Women's Champions Local Qualifying Tournament for 2010 is Joey Poh who will take the host country invite spot for the second year running at next month's showdown of the world's top professional female golfers.

Poh clinched victory with a final round score of 76 (Gross 153) to put her ahead of the 10 other challengers all fighting for a place in 'Asia's Major'.

She said, "I am really excited; I cannot quite believe I am going to play in the HSBC Women's Champions again this year. I shot one better today than yesterday but only managed one birdie [ninth hole] but my driving improved and I was able to turn my concentration on and off when I needed to."

The sixteen year old student (handicap 0.3) from the Singapore Sports School has had a great year on the golf course, picking up a host of top accolades in Singapore including first place at the first and third legs of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge. She is a member of the HSBC Youth Excellence Programme where she develops the mental and physical elements of her game amongst her peers.

Mr Guy Harvey-Samuel, CEO of HSBC Singapore congratulated Poh on her performance saying, "We are delighted to have Joey as our host country invite for a second time at the HSBC Women's Champions 2010. As long-term 'top-to-bottom' sponsors of golf with programmes running in over 25 countries, our hope is that Joey's win today will help inspire the fast growing female golfing community in Singapore, and that one day, a Singaporean will emerge as a world-class champion. I am sure the other entrants will be supporting Joey throughout the competition next month, along with all the spectators at the Garden Course."

Finishing in second place was professional Ji Jiali after a round of 81 (gross 159) and Stephanie Loi had a round of 82 to take third place (gross 160).

Ji explained, "I think the mental pressure got to me today as I have not been in that situation before. I definitely need more experience and I should get that now I am professional. It was great fun today and a pleasure to watch Joey play so well."

Vice President at TMCC, Ronald Ong, congratulated Poh on behalf of the host venue. He said, "It has been a fascinating two days of golf and we are delighted to see the standard of golf in Singapore improving. We congratulate Joey and will support her in her preparation for the HSBC Women's Champions and the challenge that awaits her."

TMCC will now provide Poh with complimentary rounds on the Garden Course to help prepare her for the four day stroke play tournament which takes place from the 25 - 28 February, featuring the top 63 female professional golfers from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

Additional Quotes:

Amanda Tan:

"My chipping and putting were better today; I was very relaxed again out there. I will be working hard to try and win next year and I will be coming to watch Yani at the HSBC Women's Champions this year."

Amelia Yong:

"I didn't play well today; My driving was letting me down. I think it is due to a lack of training and preparation for me and I need to do more work and play more often if I want to win this again next year. I will be coming down to watch the HSBC Women's Champions to support Yani and the local qualifier."

Jessica Ang:

"I played one shot better than yesterday and had a good time out there. I was very pleased with my putting today, so much better than yesterday. I was a volunteer here last year for the HSBC Women's Champions and got to do the scoring for Se Ri Pak on day one and Lorena Ochoa on day two which was a wonderful experience. I got to see them play up close and learned a lot from them. I am hoping I will have time to volunteer again this year."

Koh Sock Hwee:

"I had a good back nine today, just two over so it was a good ending to the two days for me."

Su-Ann Heng:

I had a better round today but I know I could have done a lot better. I was only one over on the front nine but I seemed to lose it on the 10th hole and couldn't get back into it. I really enjoyed being back on the golf course and my shoulder didn't cause me too much pain so I am happy."

Kok Jo Ee:

"I am a little disappointed today as I really wanted to break 80 out there, I had a shaky start and my putts were lipping out a few times but I didn't have so many three-putts which was good. I am looking forward to watching Michelle Wie in real life as I have only seen her on TV before."

Low Si Xuan:

"I lost my focus again today and made some silly mistakes. I had fun and it is great just to be back playing golf again after some time off. I came to watch the HSBC Women's Champions on the last day last year and it is great to see how the best players in the world tackle such a hard course."

Stephanie Loi:

"I had a steady front nine but I find the back nine quite tough and had a problem with my woods today. I will definitely be here in February to watch the main event."

Ji Jiali:

"I was too aggressive on some of my shots today so my club selection was a problem. I will be coming to watch Joey play at the HSBC Women's Champions and will support her all the way."

Joey Poh:

"I only had one birdie today on the ninth hole but I played solidly with one over on the front nine, and three over on the back nine."
