The 2010 U.S. Women's Open marks the 15th USGA Championship that Oakmont Country Club will host. The last time the LPGA played at this venue was in 1992, when Patty Sheehan beat Juli Inkster in a playoff.
In all, 128 professionals and 28 amateurs will compete for one of the most coveted crowns in all of golf. The field of 156 will battle for a purse of $3.25 million and a first-place prize of $585,000. Headlining the field are 23 of the top-23 on the Rolex Rankings, including newly-anointed Rolex Rankings No. 1 Cristie Kerr, No. 2 and winner of four LPGA events this year Ai Miyazato and No. 3 Jiyai Shin. Both Miyazato and Shin have held the No. 1 position this year.
The winning score at the 1992 U.S. Women’s Open at Oakmont Country Club was 4-under par 280. Expect that score to be higher this year, as the course has been lengthened. The par-71 lay-out will play a total of 6598 yards. The most notable changes are the par-3 eighth and the par-5 12th. The holes rank as the longest par-3 and longest par-5 in U.S. Women’s Open history. The eighth will play 252 yards, while the 12th will stretch to 602 yards. Rolex Rankings No. 1 and winner of the LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmans Cristie Kerr commented, “I played Oakmont twice, and I think over par will win the tournament. I think it's one of the toughest courses I've ever seen.”
