U.S. Solheim Cup points update

The U.S. Solheim Cup race is nearing its end and last week's RICOH Women's British Open provided the final opportunity for American players to earn double points as they try to secure a spot on this year's team.

Four Americans were able to take advantage with their top-20 finishes at the storied Carnoustie Golf Links. Katie Futcher made the biggest jump of the week. After shooting a final round 64, which included a 29 on the back nine, Futcher jumped from a T64 into a T14. That finish earned Futcher 24 points and she moved up to 11th in the race with 133 points. She now sits 17 points behind Christina Kim, who is currently in 10th with 150 points.

Brittany Lang helped lock up a spot on her second straight U.S. Solheim Cup team with a runner-up finish at the RICOH Women's British Open, earning 60 points to put her at 270.5 points in eighth place. The other two players to earn points were Cristie Kerr and Stacy Lewis, who are first and third respectively in the race.

Among the players besides Futcher lurking just outside the top-10 are former U.S. Solheim Cup team members Kristy McPherson (12th place, 130 points), Wendy Ward (14th, 89), Pat Hurst (15th, 86.5), and Natalie Gulbis (16th, 72.5). In addition to Futcher, there is also another young American who is trying to make her first U.S. Solheim Cup team that's not far behind in Vicky Hurst (13th, 112.5).

Kerr continues to hold a commanding lead in the point race with 750 points and Morgan Pressel is second with 447.5 points. Stacy Lewis is third with 446.5 points while Angela Stanford is fourth with 438.5 points. Paula Creamer is in fifth with 407.5 points.

Rounding out the top-10 in the points race currently are Michelle Wie (358), Brittany Lincicome (350.5), Brittany Lang (270.5), Juli Inkster (188.5) and Kim (150.5).

Only one event remains until the U.S. team is announced following the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola, which takes place Aug. 19-21. U.S. Captain Rosie Jones will add two captain's picks to the 10 points qualifiers to round out the 12-player team that will take on Allison Nicholas and the Europeans, Sept. 23-25 at Killeen Castle in Ireland.
