First-round wrap

DAYTONA BEACH, FloridaUCLA’s Stephanie Kono shot 7-under-par 65 on Tuesday to take the first-round lead at the first stage of the 2011 LPGA Qualifying Tournament. Kono, who attended the same high school (Punahou) as fellow Hawaiian Michelle Wie, recorded a bogey-free day with seven birdies on LPGA International’s Champions Course to take a one-shot lead over American Lexi Thompson and Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth.

“Today went really well,” Kono said. “I hit the ball well on every hole. I missed a couple greens, but they were on the fringe and I still had birdie opportunities.”

No stranger to big events, Kono has played in three U.S. Women’s Open’s (2006, 2010 and 2011) and was a member of the victorious U.S. Curtis Cup Team in 2010 with a 2-1-1 individual record.

Lennarth, a three-time All-American at the University of Alabama, shot 6-under-par 66 on Tuesday to tie Thompson for second entering Wednesday’s second round. Thompson’s next LPGA start will come via sponsor exemption at the Safeway Classic in Portland, ore, Aug. 19-21.

Mitsuki Katahira, a member of the Daytona State College women’s golf team, shot 5-under-par 67 for solo fourth.

Play was delayed 53 minutes on Tuesday afternoon due to lightening in the area.

The field will be cut to the top-70 players and ties following Wednesday’s second round. The top-50 players and ties following four rounds of play will advance into the Qualifying Stage II. That 72-hole event will be held Sept. 27-30, at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties from Stage II will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.

The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive LPGA Futures Tour status.
