DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Florida’s Lexi Thompson carded a second-consecutive 6-under-par 66 on Wednesday to take the lead at the first stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament. Thompson holds the 36-hole lead by three shots over former Daytona State College standout Mitsuki Katahira.
Second-round play was suspended on Wednesday night due to dangerous weather with nearly half the field yet to finish. Play was completed on Thursday morning at 9:56 a.m. with 72 players making the 36-hole cut at 4-over-par 148. Third-round play begins at 11 a.m. with the leaders teeing off at 1:01 p.m.
Thompson carded six birdies on a bogey-free day to move to 12-under-par 132 through two days of play. The 16-year-old tied for 36th at last week’s Evian Masters while playing on a sponsor’s exemption.
Katahira shot 4-under-par 68 on Wednesday to move one shot ahead of first-round leader Stephanie Kono, who finished with a 1-under-par 71 on Thursday morning. Katakhira holds solo second at 9-under-par 135, while Kono is alone in third at 8-under-par 136.
The first stage of the 2011 LPGA Qualifying Tournament includes players who are not members of any recognized Rolex Ranked women’s golf tour or are not ranked in the top-100 of the Rolex Rankings as of July 12, 2011.
The top-50 and ties on Friday will move on to the second stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament, to be held Sept. 27-30, at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties from Stage II will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.
The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive LPGA Futures Tour status.
