The U.S. Solheim Cup race is coming down to the wire and this week’s RICOH Women’s British Open is the last opportunity for American players to earn double points as they try to secure a spot on this year’s team.

Only two events, including this week’s RICOH Women’s British Open, remain until the U.S. team is announced following the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola, which takes place Aug. 19-21. U.S. Captain Rosie Jones will add two captain’s picks to the 10 points qualifiers to round out the 12-player team that will take on Allison Nicholas and the Europeans, Sept. 23-25 at Killeen Castle in Ireland.

As play kicked off at the RICOH Women’s British Open on Thursday, nine players were within 100 points of Cristina Kim who is currently in 10th place in the race with 150.5 points. Among those players lurking just outside the top-10 are former U.S. Solheim Cup team members Kristy McPherson (11th place, 130 points), Wendy Ward (14th, 89), Pat Hurst (15th, 86.5), and Natalie Gulbis (16th, 72.5). There are also two young Americans who are trying to make their first U.S. Solheim Cup team lurking not far behind in Vicky Hurst (12th, 112.5) and Katie Futcher (13th, 109).

Cristie Kerr continues to hold a commanding lead in the point race with 726 points and Morgan Pressel is second with 447.5 points. Angela Stanford is third with 438.5 points while Stacy Lewis, who earned 60 points for her second-place finish at last week’s Evian Masters, now sits in fourth with 413.5 points. Paula Creamer is in fifth with 407.5 points.

Rounding out the top-10 in the points race currently are Michelle Wie (358), Brittany Lincicome (350.5), Brittany Lang (210.5), Juli Inkster (188.5) and Kim (150.5).

The European Team will be made up of four players based off points earned, the top-4 in the Rolex Rankings and four captain's picks. European players have this week's RICOH Women's British Open and two more events on the Ladies European Tour schedule to earn points and make a move in the Rankings to make the 2011 team. Their team will be announced on Monday, August 29, 2011.
