Murphy had a successful year in 1977 as a junior, winning the National Junior Championship and finishing as runner-up in the Junior World. She was the 1978 Harder Hall champion and a 1978 quarter-finalist in the Western Women's Championship. Also in 1978, Murphy was named an All-American while attending Southern Methodist University. Her team captured the NCAA National Championship in 1979.
