In 1989, Smith played in 14 events and recorded a tie for 16th at the Mitsubishi Motors Ocean State Open as her season-best finish. The New Zealand native has completed 16 consecutive years on Tour. Her most successful financial season was 1980 when she earned nearly $34,000 and posted her career-best finish, a solo second at the Sun City Classic. Smith already had been crowned champion several times prior to her LPGA experience. She was the leading money winner on the Australian Tour in 1983 and finished second in the Japan Ladies Open that same year. Two years later, Smith took the Japanese Ladies Master title.
Dominating New Zealand women’s golf in the early 1970’s, Smith captured the New Zealand Junior in 1968, 1970 and 1972. She won the New Zealand Stroke Play Championship in 1972 and was named the 1971 and 1972 New Zealand Golfer of the Year.
