Players selected to compete for one of the biggest trophies in women’s sports will be finalized in less than 24 hours.
10 members of the Solheim Cup’s Team U.S.A. and eight members of Team Europe were finalized at the end of play Sunday following the final round of the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. The final pieces of the American team will be announced by captain Juli Inkster on Monday evening at 7:00pm on Golf Channel with European captain Carin Koch making her four picks known Tuesday morning on Sky Sports.
In one month, Team U.S.A. will make the trip to Germany in hopes of winning back the Cup after two consecutive losses. The makeup of this year’s team looks nearly identical to that of 2013, with Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson, Cristie Kerr, Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel, Angela Stanford and Gerina Piller all returning in hopes of completing what they were unable to accomplish two years ago. Each of those players qualified via Solheim Cup points which accumulated based on play since the 2013 Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. Qualifying this year via Rolex Rankings are Lizette Salas, who also was a member of that 2013 team, and the only newcomer to Team U.S.A. in rookie Alison Lee.
The final two spots on the team will be selected by captain Inkster and announced Monday evening during an hour-long special on Golf Channel. Those on the bubble include veteran Paula Creamer, three-time member Brittany Lang, 2013 member Jessica Korda, 2014 RICOH Women’s Open Champion Mo Martin and 2014 Canadian Pacific Women’s Open Champion Austin Ernst. The two players selected by Inkster will be present with the captain for the announcement on Golf Channel.
Team Europe also finalized a second portion of their team following play Sunday evening, with the four players qualifying via Rolex Ranking being named. Anna Nordqvist, Azahara Munoz, Sandra Gal and Carlota Ciganda secured their spots on Team Europe, adding their names to the four players who already qualified via Solheim Points in Suzann Pettersen, Gwladys Nocera, Charley Hull and Melissa Reid. Captain Carin Koch will announce her four captain’s picks on Tuesday morning on Sky Sports Sportswomen TV at 11:30am BST.
A breakdown of Team U.S.A. and Europe will be available right here on LPGA.com following the announcement of each team’s captain’s picks, beginning Monday evening with captain Inkster’s announcement on Golf Channel at 7:00pm.
