Tour Returns With Top-Ranked Players
After a three-week break, the LPGA Tour returns to action this week at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open where 20 of the top-25 ranked players in the Rolex Rankings are in the field, including world No.1 Lydia Ko, No.2 Ariya Jutanugarn and No.3 Brooke Henderson. Jutanugarn withdrew from the third round of the women’s competition at the Olympic games in Rio due to a left knee injury but is anticipated to compete this week in Canada. Olympic gold medalist Inbee Park moved up to No.4 in the rankings following her victory but is not in the field this week. No.5 Lexi Thompson, who represented the U.S.A in Rio will also not compete in Canada.
Fourth Time's A Charm?
Olympic silver medalist Lydia Ko returns to Canada to defend her title after defeating Stacy Lewis in a playoff last year to capture her third victory at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. Ko’s first two victories came back in 2012 and 2013 when Ko was still an amateur. The world No.1 is a four-time winner in 2016 in addition to silver medalist, who became the youngest medal winner from New Zealand at 19-years-old.
Returning To Canada
Canada’s Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp return home for this week’s event after representing their country in Rio. Henderson may be disappointed with her performance in the games, where she came up short of the podium with a T-7 finish, but the fans will still have plenty to cheer about in watching the three-time LPGA Tour winner and major champion tee it up on home soil. Sharp finished 30th in Rio at one-over par. Her game has continued to trend upward as the season progresses, with three top-15 finishes in her last six starts on Tour.
