Heavy rains early this week left the River Course playing long and soft at the start of the opening round, but by late afternoon, the sun started to peak through and was shining on Mika Miyazato.
“Course condition was pretty wet, and last two days with so much rain, so that’s why it’s so wet,” said Miyazato. “But I tried to be more aggressive so that’s why maybe I played very well today.”
Her putter was working for her today, and she stayed focused throughout the day and took it one shot at a time.
“I was more focused on one shot at a time. I talked to -- I spoke last night with my mental coach, so like the last three months, four months, I did not enjoy golf, so I tried to I enjoy golf this week, and he said, one shot at a time, more detail, so I tried to be more detailed today, so that’s why it works good.”
Miyazato took the outright lead with a birdie on No. 8 and will sleep on a one-shot lead over defending champion, Minjee Lee, and Brittany Lincicome at the Kingsmill Championship Presented by JTBC.
Miyazato is feeling confident and excited heading into round two and plans to hit the course and be more aggressive, something she hasn’t felt in the last couple of months.
Eight sit two shots back in a tie for fourth.
