SAN MARTIN – Anna Nordqvist and Brittany Lang are headed to extra holes at the U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA.
The pair finished the championship at six-under par and will immediately begin a three-hole aggregate playoff at the par 3, 16th, par 4, 17th and par 5, 18th hole. If they are tied at the end of the three holes, they will continue to play the 18th hole until a winner is determined.
Nordqvist started the final round at one-under par, six-strokes back of leader Lydia Ko. She carded a final round five-under par, 67 for her low round of the week to finish with a total of 282. Lang trailed by two-strokes heading into Sunday and posted a one-under par, 71 to finish in a share of the lead with Nordqvist. It's the first playoff at the U.S. Women's Open since 2011 when So Yeon Ryu defeated Hee Kyung Seo.
Nordqvist is a six-time winner on the LPGA Tour, who won the 2009 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship for her first victory on Tour. She is already a winner in 2016 after successfully defending her title at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Lang captured her first and only victory on Tour at the 2012 Manulife LPGA Classic where she won in a four-way playoff with a birdie at the third extra hole.
This is the second consecutive major championship to be decided in a playoff after Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson went to one-extra hole at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June, where Henderson made birdie to win.
