23 of Top-25
For the second straight week on Tour, a strong field will square off – this time in Singapore at the HSBC Women’s Champions. 23 of the world’s top-25 players are competing in the 10th edition of the event. World No. 1 Lydia Ko headlines the field along with No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn, No. 3 In Gee Chun, No. 4 Shanshan Feng and No. 5 Lexi Thompson.
World No. 6 Ha Na Jang is also in the field to defend her title this week. She is one of six former winners of the HSBC Women’s Champions who are in the field this week including Karrie Webb (2011), Angela Stanford (2012), Stacy Lewis (2013), Paula Creamer (2014) and Inbee Park (2015). Creamer received a sponsor invite to compete this week.
Park Makes Tour Debut
In November 2016, the KLPGA’s leading money winner Sung Hyun Park announced she would be taking up membership on the LPGA this season. She earned status by way of the money list after contending in three majors in 2016 including finishing runner-up at the Evian Championship. The world No. 11 relocated to Orlando, Florida during the off-season and makes her 2017 debut this week in Singapore. In March, she is also expected to play the Kia Classic and Bank of Hope Founders Cup.
Dancing Defender
Ha Na Jang defends her first of two events in 2017 at this week’s HSBC Women’s Champions. Last season, Jang carded a final round 65, including an eagle at the 72nd hole to win by four-strokes ahead of Pornanong Phatlum. Jang celebrated in the style she’s become known for with a Beyonce-inspired dance routine on the 18th green. The world No. 6 is already a winner in 2017 after capturing her debut event of 2017 at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.
Thanks for the Invite
2014 champion Paula Creamer is one of three players who received sponsor invites for this week’s HSBC Women’s Champions. Amanda Tan and Michelle Wie also received invites. 17-year-old Tan won a three-way playoff at the local qualifying tournament to earn the final invite into the field. It’s the second time Tan will compete in the event. She previously competed in 2014 as a 14-year-old. After missing the cut at the season opening Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, Wie bounced back with a T-30 finish in Australia after changing to a claw grip style of putting. She finished T-65 in this event last season. Creamer also missed the cut in the Bahamas and is making just her second start of the year this week in Singapore where she finished T-24 last season.
