Lexi Thompson and Tony Finau jumped into fourth place after a 6-under, 66 on a rainy and windy day two of the QBE Shootout at the Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, Fla.
Thompson, only the second woman to compete in the QBE Shootout since Annika Sorenstam teamed with Fred Couples in 2006, and playing partner, Finau, thrived with the modified alternate shot format despite tougher weather conditions in the second round.
“Alternate shot is a very tough format, but I knew if I had Tony on my team and could hit some of those tee shots out there we would be taking his tee shot for the most part, so it definitely helped out,” said Thompson.
Thompson and Finau finished with four straight birdies and currently sit three-shots behind the leaders, Shane Lowry / Graeme McDowell and Sean O’Hair / Brendan Steele, at 18-under par and will need a solid final round to climb atop the leaderboard. Teams will play a better ball format for the final round.
