For the second straight year Lexi Thompson is competing in the QBE Shootout at Tiburón Golf Club in Naples. This year she is paired with PGA Tour’s Tony Finau as one of 12 two-person teams. The event is celebrating its 29th year and is the longest-running PGA TOUR-sanctioned post-season event.
The duo finished birdie-par to climb to 9-under par and into a share of ninth on the leaderboard.
The opening round format was a scramble with each player hitting a drive on every hole, then the best drive is selected. Each player then plays a second shot from the spot where the drive that was chosen lays, and the best second shot is selected. This process is repeated until the hole is completed.
PGA Tour veterans Steve Stricker and Sean O’Hair lead the way after carding a 15-under par, 57 in Friday’s scramble format. Both are past champions of the event. O’Hair won in 2012 with Kenny Perry and Stricker won in 2009 with Jerry Kelly.
