Tiffany Joh notches best finish of the year; credits Wisconsin fuel
Although her stomach didn’t like her at 2 a.m., Tiffany Joh had a laugh about how she was powered by some ‘delicious’ Wisconsin staples to a tie for sixth after a 5-under-par 67 Sunday at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic.
Joh said she dined on cheese curds (a Wisconsin staple that she called ‘amazing’) along with her first double bacon butter burger, which she called ‘pretty good.’ She washed it all down with a root beer, too, on Saturday night.
“It's funny, I actually flew in a little late and my clubs got in like Wednesday night, so I kind of wished that I had gotten here a little bit earlier,” she said. “It was delicious, and now I know.”
Joh’s tie for sixth was her best finish of 2017.
Cristie Kerr getting ready for the U.S. Women’s Open
10 years ago Cristie Kerr was hoisting the U.S. Women’s Open trophy, her first major title. Next week, she’ll head into the third major of the year with some confidence after a fine finish this week in Wisconsin.
Kerr notched her fifth top-5 finish in 2017 this week, which includes a victory.
She made seven birdies Sunday – offset by a lone bogey on her 72nd hole – to fire a 6-under-par 66. “It’s always good to be playing well going into a major,” she said.
Sei Young Kim continuing her great play
It seems as though, week-after-week, Sei Young Kim’s name continues to show up on leaderboards.
That trend was no different this week at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, as Kim rode a 9-under-par 63 (nearly the course record, until it was broken by Pornanong Phatlum’s 10-under-par 62 later in the day) to a solo-third place finish.
It was Kim’s fifth top-5 finish on the year, which includes a win at the Citibanamex Lorena Ochoa Match Play presented by Aeromexico and Delta. Just last week, Kim finished fourth at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and appears to be trending in the right direction for next week’s U.S. Women’s Open.
“I have good momentum this week because… also last week I played good, and this week played good,” she said. I'm very (much) looking forward to next week. So exciting. I can't wait for next week.”
Pornanong Phatlum fires course-record 10-under-par 62
Although Pornanong Phatlum came up just short Sunday – eventually losing the Thornberry Creek LPGA classic by three shots to Katherine Kirk – she’ll walk away from the tournament holding the course record, thanks to a 10-under-par 62 Sunday.
Her round, which she said was ‘fantastic,’ featured eight birdies and an eagle, with no bogeys.
She explained her driving was the key to her success Sunday, and she escaped without a three-putt during the final round as well. She said her game plan went ‘very well’ Sunday, as she moved up 20 spots on the leaderboard thanks to her tremendous finish.
“10-under is my new record,” she said. “Everything (was) fantastic today.”
