Bronte Law set a 4:30 a.m. alarm on Thursday morning to get up for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open.
While she admitted that's a bit before she'd prefer to rise and shine, she took full advantage in round one and carded an early 3-under, 68 at Gullane Golf Club.
"You never really sleep very well when you know you have to get up so early," said the native of England. "Definitely made the most of it. The first nine holes, there was barely any wind at all, which was really nice. It started to get up on the back nine and (I) managed to play some good golf still and hold it together and yeah very happy with it."
Law made three birdies over her first eight holes and then held steady as the wind picked up. She finished her round with eight straight pars.
The 23-year-old from Stockport is someone to keep an eye on the rest of the week. She is very comfortable playing links style golf. Growing up, Law was a member at Hillside Golf Club and Parkside Golf Club, both links courses.
"I used to go out there and practice and kind of learn the trade of links golf because obviously we always have the British Open and that was something that I used to go and watch as a child," explained Law after her round. "I knew if I wanted to win anything on a links course when I was older as a pro, I had to learn how to play."
The imagination of links golf is what really makes the style special according to Law.
"Playing now in America all year round and coming back and playing in the wind, you kind of forget for a second. I was talking to my coach and we had to kind of re-teach the punch shot last week. I've just been flying the ball up in the air over in the (United) States."
Law, a confident second-year pro, has three top 10s this year and qualified for Team England at the UL International Crown. As with every week, she's in Scotland to contend.
"Every week I turn up, I hope to win," said Law. "You have to put yourself in a position where you can do that. On the first day, it's always important to not play yourself out of the tournament and kind of be up there and hopefully by the end of today, that will be where I'll be. I'll go out tomorrow with the same intention."
She's most certainly in position.
