Nine-Time LPGA Tour Champion Returns to Scene of First Career Victory
Major Champions Jutanugarn, S.H. Park and Ko Confirmed
PORTLAND, OR (July 19, 2019) – Two-time Cambia Portland Classic champion Brooke Henderson returns to the scene of her first career victory at Columbia Edgewater Country Club for the 48thedition of the Cambia Portland Classic from August 29 – September 1.
Canadian Brooke Henderson hit the headlines in 2015 as a 17 year-old with her record-breaking eight-stroke victory at the Portland Classic, finishing on a tournament low 21-under-par. In winning the title, Henderson also became only the second ever LPGA champion to come through Monday qualifying and gained immediate LPGA Tour membership and she has not looked back.
In 2016 Henderson went on to capture her first major title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship before returning to successfully defend her Portland Classic title, this time with a four-stroke victory from America’s Stacy Lewis.
Still only 21 years of age, Henderson recently became the most successful Canadian golf professional in history after winning her ninth LPGA title at the Meijer LPGA Classic. She returns to Portland firmly inside the top ten of the Rolex Rankings, currently sitting at No. 8.
Henderson added, “I have extremely good memories here in Portland and love competing in this event. Before winning in 2015, I did not have an LPGA Tour card so this event really kick started my career and helped get me to where I am today. The fans are always so supportive, to the point that it almost feels like I am playing in front of a home crowd out there. I can’t wait to tee it up again this year.”
Joining her in the stellar field are a host of major champions and Rolex Ranking No. 1 players past and present.
Sung Hyun Park, who currently leads the rankings, is a two-time major champion and will make her debut at the tournament this year, whilst former Rolex Ranking No. 1s Jutanugarn and Ko will make their third and second appearances respectively, having both not played since 2015.
Commenting about her debut, Sung Hyun Park, said, “I’ve heard a lot about this tournament and had to see it for myself. Portland sounds like a fun city that really loves its sport and I am excited to visit there for the first time. I believe that there has not been a South Korean champion for ten years so I’ll be doing my best to try and change this for my country.”
Ko added, “This event is one of the oldest on the LPGA schedule and one that everyone talks about on tour. I have not been able to play the last couple of years but I am delighted to be back and compete against what is turning out to be a really strong field. Columbia Edgewater Country Club is a fun golf course, which is always in immaculate condition in August, so I cannot wait to get back out there. Cambia have been fantastic supporter of the Portland Classic for the last five years and I’m so pleased to be able to support this tournament.”
Cambia Portland Classic Tournament Director Chris Garrett said, “We’re extremely excited to announce this list of world-class names to the 2019 Cambia Portland Classic. Between the four players, they hold a combined seven major titles and more than 40 LPGA tournament victories, which is quite an accomplishment considering their combined age is only 91. We know that the sport fans in Portland will enjoy watching these incredibly talented athletes and we look forward to announcing more big names in the coming weeks.”
Entering its 48th year, Cambia Portland Classic is the longest running non-major championship on the LPGA Tour schedule. The 72-hole tournament will be played Aug. 29 -Sept. 1, 2019 with a purse of $1.3 million.
The tournament will be televised by Golf Channel and distributed globally to the LPGA’s international television partners.
The Cambia Portland Classic is owned by Tournament Golf Foundation and operated by IMG.
