Anna Nordqvist broke through a five-year winless drought last year with her win at the Honda LPGA Thailand. She would only have to wait two more starts for her next win, cranking out two wins in four starts in 2014.
She could now do the same in 2015. Nordqvist won the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer a month ago and could again only have to wait two more starts for her next win if she can catch Na Yeon Choi Sunday.
“Yeah, last year I was playing great in the beginning of the year. Kind of getting the win, not having won on Tour for a couple years, gave me a lot of confidence again. All of a sudden the second win came right after that,” Nordqvist said. “But all you can do is just put yourself in contention. I wasn't in a great place leading into Atlantic City, I was a little frustrated and couldn't really get a lot out of my game. So I guess the wins happen when you least expect it so I'm trying not to put any pressure or any expectation on it.”
Interestingly, Nordqvist also trailed at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, one of only three three-day events on the LPGA Tour just like this one, entering the final round but that deficit was only one shot. But in her win at the 2014 Kia Classic she trailed by two shots entering the final round. Her first two career wins, though, were both wins in which she started the day with the lead and closed with it.
“It doesn't really matter. Obviously if you're in the lead, you've got a shot or two advantage. But I'm happy every time I put myself in contention,” she said. “I mean, some days you might be a stroke or two in front or chasing, but I was happy to make the last one because that means I was a shot closer to Na Yeon for tomorrow.”
