The middle of the day in Thailand can be particularly hot this time of year. Last week, the midday heat was multiplied when three players holed out for eagles on par 4s during the third round of the Honda LPGA Thailand, adding to the charitable count for the Wounded Warrior Weekend.
Cheyenne Woods got things going when she finished her final nine – the front nine at Siam Country Club’s Pattaya Old Course – with an eagle-2 from the fairway. Beatriz Recari got in on the festivities by holing out on the par-4 15th hole, setting the Spaniard up to play the final 22 holes of the tournament in 11-under par – including a course-record, final-round 63 – to place in a tie for fifth. A couple hours later, leader Stacy Lewis saved her round with a 2 on the same par 4 after she drove the green on the 316-yard hole. Lewis finished in a tie for second, two strokes behind Amy Yang.
There were four eagles on the weekend – including Carlota Ciganda’s “routine” eagle-3 on the par-5 finishing hole in the final round – to add to the season total. Through four tournaments, there have been 27 eagles in the final two rounds of competition, bringing the total to $27,000. Of the 27 eagles, five have been eagles on par 4s.
The Wounded Warrior Weekend takes place during the final two rounds at LPGA tournaments, with CME Group donating $1,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project for each eagle that is recorded. This amount will increase to $5,000 for each eagle during the weekend of the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship and a formal check will be presented to the Wounded Warrior Project during the trophy ceremony. For the 2014 season, 283 eagles were made on the weekend, raising $283,000. While no eagles were made on the weekend in Naples, the CME Group generously rounded up to $300,000. The 2014 season also had a lot of aces and double eagles. Of the 31 holes in one, 15 came in weekend play. Of a record four double eagles during the year, three were scored on the weekend.
