Hard work and determination in overcoming adversity have been the key ingredients in Shirley's outstanding career. She came back from a serious automobile accident in 1965 to have several more great years, including 1970 when she won four consecutive events in which she was entered. She also had surgery on her ankle in 1971 and '73 and in each case returned to compete. She concentrates mainly on her career as a golf teacher these days-she was voted the LPGA Teacher-of-the-Year in 1978 but still managed to win almost $7,000 in '79 playing in only eight events.
Amateur
Before turning pro in 1959 Shirley won many amateur and open events, including the McCall Open in 1957 and '58, the Idaho Open in '57, '58 and '59 and the Pacific Northwest Amateur in 1958. She also won the Oregon Open in 1959 and was the youngest player ever to receive the Dorothy Pease Trophy (Trans-Miss) at the age of 15.
