South Koreans top final leaderboard at LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
Moon earns medalist honors; 32 players advance to LPGA Final Qualifying School
After shooting a 69 in Thursday's third round, Moon had an up-and-down final round, but windy conditions kept the final-round scores high enough to give Moon the win. She began the day with a bogey on the first hole, but responded with a birdie on the par-5, 2nd hole to stay at 5-under for the tournament. Moon then made bogeys on holes 5 and 7 to make the turn at 3-under-par. On the back nine she birdied the par-5, 11th to go to 4-under, but bogeyed holes 13 and 18 to finish at 2-under-par.
“I was very nervous today, but now I am so happy,” said Moon. “There was a lot of wind today and the pin placements were hard so it was a tough day today. Yesterday was much easier for me.”
This marks Moon's first appearance at LPGA Final Qualifying School as she just missed going to the final stage last year after missing the 30-player cut-off by just one-shot in Venice, Fla. She graduated from Yongin University in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea this year. A member of the Korea LPGA (KLPGA), her first professional win came at the Hite Cup Ladies Open. Moon has also recorded wins as an amateur at the 2001 Hyundai Securities Ladies Open and the 2000 Asia-Pacific Junior Championship.
“I will go back to Korea to play some KLPGA events and then come back to get ready for the final (qualifying school). I am excited,” said Moon.
Amateurs Seo-Jae Lee and Ji-Young Oh both shot 1-under-par 71 in the final round to finish tied for second place at 1-under-par 287. Lee, who carded 71-73-72-71 this week, began her round with a birdie on the first hole to go to 1-under-par. She made par on holes 2 to 8, but a bogey on the par-5, ninth brought her back to even-par. Her back nine was quiet until she made a birdie on the 15th hole to go to 1-under-par 287 and tie with Oh for second place.
“Today the pin placements were very hard,” said Lee. “My second shots were very difficult so I really had to concentrate. I had two three-putts today, because I was very nervous. But my birdie on number 15 made me feel better.”
Eighteen-year-old Lee won the Korea Junior Golf Association Chairman Cup Championship in 2004 and also finished fifth in the Korea Women's Amateur Championship in 2004.
Oh, who is 18-years-old, also started her day at even-par. She birdied holes 2 and 9 on the front nine to make the turn at 2-under-par. Her back nine was quiet as she made par on holes 10 to 15, but a bogey on 16 brought her back to 1-under-par 287 for the tournament and in a tie for second with Lee.
“My driver was very good this week, I was hitting it longer, but my putter was not good this week,” said Oh. “I had a lot of chances for birdies, but I only had two birdies, so my round today was OK.”
Oh, who is a student at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., won six FCWT junior golf tournaments in 2006. She was also a 2005 South Korean Junior National Team leader.
South Korean amateurs I.K. Kim (71-73-75-72) and Na On Min (74-72-70-75) along with Lee-Anne Pace of Mosselbay, South Africa (68-75-71-77) tied for fourth place at 3-over-par 291.
The Rancho Mirage qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2006. The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament is Oct. 3-6 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top-30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the California sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29-Dec. 3.

Moon takes three-shot lead at LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament going into final round
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif., Sept. 21, 2006 – South Korean Hyun-Hee Moon shot a low-round 69 in the third round on Thursday to take a three-shot lead going into the final round at the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club. Moon holds a three-shot lead over Samantha Head of the United Kingdom and Lee-Anne Pace of Mosselbay, South Africa.
Moon, who has a three-day total of 70-72-69=211 (-5), made birdies on holes 3 and 9 on the front nine to make the turn at 4-under-par for the tournament. On the back nine, she made another birdie on 15 to go to 5-under. She bogeyed the 17th hole, but a birdie on 18 brought her back to 3-under-par 69 for the day and 5-under-par 211 for the tournament.
“I had a great day at the course today, my iron shots were perfect and I made a lot of good putts,” said Moon following her round. “I love the speed of the green, and because of that I was able to make a lot of putts. Hopefully I will have a great round again tomorrow.”
This marks Moon's second attempt at qualifying for the LPGA Tour as she also participated in the LPGA qualifying school in 2005. She graduated from Yongin University in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea this year. Her first professional win came at the Hite Cup Ladies Open, and she also has wins as an amateur at the 2001 Hyundai Securities Ladies Open and the 2000 Asia-Pacific Junior Championship.
Head has carded a 69-72-73=214 (-2) so far this week, but her 1-over-par 73 in Thursday's third round was good enough to move her into second place. She made two birdies in the third round on holes 2 and 12 to go along with three bogeys on holes 3, 7 and 15.
Head, whose twin sister Johanna is an exempt member on the LPGA Tour, has played on the Ladies European Tour (LET) since 1997. She has been victorious twice on the LET with wins coming at the 1999 Ladies Italian Open and the 2001 South African Masters. She has also played on the Japan LPGA.
Pace, who shot under par for the second time this week, used a 71 on the Dinah Shore course on Thursday to move into a tie for second with Head. Pace had a quiet front nine, making pars on all but one hole, making birdie the seventh. She had an up-and-down back nine as she made two birdies (holes 15, 17) and two bogeys (holes 11, 16) to finish the day at 1-under and 2-under for the tournament.
Pace, who has won multiple national tournaments in South Africa, began her college career at Murray State University where she was the 2003 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and was also the 2003 Ohio Valley Conference Champion before transferring to the University of Tulsa. At Tulsa, she was a second-team NCAA All-American in 2005. She played in 16 events on the Duramed Futures Tour this season with three top-10 finishes.
Adrienne Gautreaux (71-73-71) of Mabank, Texas and Kristina Tucker (72-71-72) of Stockholm, Sweden are tied in fourth place at 1-under-par 215.
Ashley Gomes of Pleasanton, Calif., who was tied for 41st going into the third round, also shot a low-round 69 on Thursday to move into a four-way tie for sixth place at 1-over-par 217 (75-73-69).
The final round, which will feature the low 70 players and ties, will be played on the Palmer course at Mission Hills Country Club. The top-30 players and ties at the end of 72 holes will advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29-Dec. 3.
The Rancho Mirage qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2006. The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament is Oct. 3-6 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top-30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the California sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.

Three tied for lead at LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament after second round
Eighty-four players make the cut
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif., Sept. 20, 2006 – Three players are tied for the lead after the second round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club. Lisa Meldrum of Montreal, Canada, Taya Battistella of Bend, Ore., and Su A Yim of Seoul, South Korea are all tied for the lead at 4-under-par 140. Eighty-four players made the cut on Wednesday, which was 6-over-par 150.
Meldrum moved into the lead after a low-round 6-under-par 66 (74-66=140) on the Arnold Palmer course in Wednesday's second round. Meldrum, who began her round on the back nine, put together a bogey-free round that included birdies on holes 10, 15 and 18 on her front nine and holes 2, 3 and 6 on her back nine.
“I just hit the ball really solid today and made some putts,” said Meldrum. “I struggled a little bit with my ball striking the last four or five holes and missed a 6-footer on the final hole for birdie, but overall everything was working for me and everything just flowed.”
Meldrum is a 2004 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where she earned All-Big 12 honors all four years and was also a two-time NCAA Honorable Mention All-American. She played on the Duramed Futures Tour this season with her best finish coming at the last tournament of the year, the ILOVENY Championship in Albany, N.Y., where she finished ninth. Meldrum most recently won her first professional event at the CN Canadian Women's Tour Championship at the beginning of September.
Battistella, who also played the Palmer course, used six birdies along with just one bogey on hole 14 to shoot a 5-under-par 67 in the second round (73-67=140). She began the day with a birdie on the first hole and used birdies on holes 4, 10, 11, 16 and 18 to move into a tie for the lead going into the final two days.
“I've been hitting the ball really well all year and today I finally got my putter going, and it also helped that I was hitting the ball close to the hole,” said Battistella. “If I can stay patient and in a rhythm, I think I have a good chance here.”
Battistella was a member of the women's golf program at Portland State University, where she was a two-time Big Sky Conference champion. She has played professionally in Asia and on the CN Canadian Women's Tour and won an event in Duncan, British Columbia in May. Battistella also played in the CN Canadian Women's Open, an event on the 2006 LPGA schedule, where she tied for 70th.
Kim, who played on the Dinah Shore course, carded a bogey-free 4-under-par 68 in the second round to move into a tie for the lead after a two-day 72-68=140. Kim began her round on the back nine, paring 10 straight holes before she birdied four straight on holes 2, 3, 4 and 5. She finished the day making par on her final four holes.
Kim has competed on the Duramed Futures Tour the past three seasons and has recorded four top-10 finishes in the past two seasons. She has also played on the Korea LPGA.
Samantha Head of the United Kingdom is currently in fourth place at 69-72=141 (-3) while South Korean Hyun-Hee Moon is in fifth place at 70-72=142 (-2).
The final two rounds, which will feature the low 70 players and ties, will be played on the Dinah Shore course at Mission Hills Country Club.

Miyajima leads at LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament after opening round 67
Fernandes, Pace one shot back
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif., Sept. 19, 2006 – The first round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club is complete, and 24-year-old Shayna Miyajima of Maui, Hawaii, owns the first-round lead after a 5-under-par 67. Miyajima holds a one-shot lead over Lisa Fernandes of Raleigh, N.C. and Lee-Anne Pace of Mosselbay, South Africa.
Miyajima, who was as a four-year member of the San Diego State University women's golf team from 2001-04, carded a bogey-free first round on the 6,368-yard Arnold Palmer course. She will play her second round on the 6,460-yard Dinah Shore course, which plays host to the LPGA's first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
“Everything was going my way today. When you are on, you are on,” said Miyajima following her round. “I hit a lot of greens, I think 17, which helped me make a lot of close birdie putts.
Miyajima, who played in 17 events on the Duramed Futures Tour this year, recorded three birdies on the front nine, including holes 1, 3 and 7 to make the turn at 3-under. She began her back nine with a birdie on 10 to go to 4-under and added another birdie on the par-5, 15th hole to go to 5-under. Miyajima made par on her final three holes to finish the day with no bogeys and a low-round 67.
“I went into today just trying to shoot even-par. I had an up-and-down season on the (Duramed) Futures Tour, but this is what really counts, to qualify for the LPGA Tour,” said Miyajima. “I'm just going to continue to try to do the best that I can this week.”
The 1998 Hawaii State High School Champion, Miyajima's best finish in 2006 on the Duramed Futures Tour was a tie for 58th. Miyajima was a two-time captain her junior and senior seasons at San Diego State University, and finished fourth in the Mountain West Championships during her sophomore season.
Fernandes and Pace are both tied for second place at 4-under-par 68. Fernandes, who also played the Arnold Palmer Course, began the day slow with bogeys on her first two holes to go to 2-over-par. She rebounded with a birdie on the third hole and made par on her final six holes of her front nine to make the turn at 1-over-par. That is when Fernandes caught fire as she birdied four straight holes (10-13) and birdied again on the 15th hole to finish the day at 4-under.
Fernandes has played the past six years on the Duramed Futures Tour and has recorded two runner-up finishes. A 2000 graduate of The Ohio State University, Fernandes earned medalist honors at the 2000 NCAA East Regional Championship. She was also a non-exempt member of the LPGA Tour in 2003.
Pace, who played on the Dinah Shore Course during the first round, carded six birdies to go along with two bogeys on holes 6 and 11. She made birdie on holes 1, 3, and 7 to make the turn at 2-under-par and went on to do the same on the back nine as she birdied holes 10, 12 and 17 to go along with her bogey on 11.
Jeanne Cho of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Samantha Head of the United Kingdom are tied for fourth place, carding 3-under-par 69 during Tuesday's first round.
Players are competing on both the Arnold Palmer and Dinah Shore courses at Mission Hills Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the 36-hole cut is made following the second round. The final two rounds, which will feature the low 70 players and ties, will be played on the Dinah Shore course.
The top-30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the California sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2006 Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
