Choi, Kim share medalist honors at LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament
Fifteen players earn exempt status for 2007
Hye Jung Choi and In-Kyung Kim shared medalist honors at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament on Sunday as they finished atop the leaderboard at 13-under-par 347.
Choi (67-70-75-68-67) carded six birdies on Sunday to post a final-round 67 and share medalist honors with Kim. Choi had a quiet front nine as she birdied the second hole, but bogeyed 7 to make the turn at even-par for the day. Choi heated up on the back nine with three straight birdies on 10 through 12 to move to 11-under for the tournament. She went on to finish her back nine just as strong as she started with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to finish at 13-under.
“I didn't sleep last night. I just wanted to keep practicing and keep going,” Choi said. “I did a lot of studying and learned how to best play (last year on the Duramed Futures Tour).”
Kim (67-73-68-66-73), who began the day with a six-shot lead, shot 1-over-par 73 in the final round to finish at 13-under for the tournament.
“I am happy now, I wasn't before. I played with everything today,” Kim said, who turned professional following Sunday's final round. “I had good shots. I had a few mistakes, but otherwise, I played great.”
The 18-year-old made three bogeys to go along with two birdies on Sunday. Kim started the day with a bogey on her first hole, a bogey on 7 and a birdie on 9 to make the turn at 13-under. On the back nine, Kim bogeyed 12, but made a birdie on 16 to share medalist honors.
“I just want to play tournaments. This year, I didn't play many tournaments, so I just want to get out there and have fun and learn and make some friends,” she said.
After beginning the final round with two bogeys, 22-year-old Maru Martinez made seven birdies to card a final-round 68 to finish in third place at 10-under-par 350 (70-69-73-70-68).
“I started really nervous and I think I had so much energy I couldn't control, but then I calmed down and everything felt fine,” Martinez said. “I could definitely play my game today. I had great shots into the greens and I putted well. All the work I've done in the past two months really came together today.”
2006 LPGA Tour rookie Kim Hall finished fourth at 7-under (70-69-73-72-69=353), while fellow Tour member Clarissa Childs (70-68-73-73-71) and 18-year-old Angela Park (70-67-71-74-73) both tied for fifth at 5-under-par 355.
Four players tied for 12th place at 359 (-1) to round out the final 15 exempt cards for the 2007 LPGA Tour season: Aram Cho, Erica Blasberg, Ashley Hoagland and Paige Mackenzie. Forty-one players earned conditional status for next season.
The 90-hole tournament was staged at LPGA International on the Champions and Legends courses, with golfers playing each twice before Saturday's cut to the top-70 and ties. Players were repaired for the third and fourth rounds based on the course they started on in the first round.
Two LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournaments in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Venice, Fla., were held to help determine the field for the Final LPGA Qualifying Tournament. The top-30 finishers and ties from each sectional advanced to the final stage and join 58 current LPGA Tour members who are trying to improve or retain their playing status for 2007. The field is completed by the eligible players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list. The top-five finishers on the Duramed Futures Tour money list automatically received their exempt card for 2007: Song-Hee Kim, Charlotte Mayorkas, In-Bee Park, Kristy McPherson and Meaghan Francella.
Consistent with the LPGA's history as being a true World Tour, the 137-player field featured 54 international players from 21 countries outside the United States, as well as one player from Puerto Rico. South Korea was represented by the most international players with 16, followed by Canada (7), Sweden (5), Australia (4), England (2), France (2), Mexico (2), Scotland (2) and Taiwan (2). Remaining countries were Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, India, Ireland, Paraguay, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and Venezuela with one player each.
Twenty-nine states were represented in the field, with California leading the way with 17 entrants, followed by Florida with 12. Texas had five representatives, while Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio each had four. Minnesota, New York and Illinois each had three players in the field.

Kim extends lead to six strokes at LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament
75 players make cut at 7-over-par 295
Seventy-five players remain to compete in the final round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International. Jumping out to a commanding lead is amateur In-Kyung Kim, whose 6-under-par 66 (67-73-68-66=274, -14) gives her a six-stroke cushion ahead of Hye Jung Choi (67-70-75-68=280, -8).
For Sunday's final round, the 136-player field was reduced to 75 players firing 7-over-par 295 or better. Competition will continue at LPGA International with all contestants on the Legends course. The top 15 players will earn exempt status for the 2007 LPGA Tour, while the next 35 and ties will earn non-exempt status. Any ties for the 15 exempt cards will be broken by a three-hole playoff, in which scores are cumulative. Ties after three holes will continue in a sudden-death playoff format.
Kim played Saturday's round on the Champions course, where she previously posted a 1-over-par 73 during Thursday's second round. Kim carded one bogey on Saturday on the par-5, 13th hole after a three putt from 15 feet. Seven birdies, though, gave Kim the field-low score for either course.
“I focused on every shot, hole by hole, and not think about the cut and try to do my best,” said Kim, who had a perfect 18 greens in regulation against 30 putts. “I just played my game.”
She started hot with a birdie on the first hole and, by the turn, had carded three more birdies on holes five, seven and eight for a 4-under-par 32. She picked up where she left off with a birdie on 10 followed by consecutive birdies on 14 and 15 after her bogey.
In November, Kim won the Duramed Futures Tour qualifying tournament, but chose to remain an amateur through this week.
“I want my first professional tournament to be an LPGA tournament,” she said after carding her lowest score of the season—she already owns a 64, which she shot as a 14-year-old.
Although she has one year of Tour membership to her credit, Hye Jung Choi was only able to play in three events and returned to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament to retain her card. She is the sole golfer in second place at 280 (-8) and two strokes ahead of five players tied for third. Choi was bogey-free with four birdies on holes eight, 12, 13 and 18, which were aided by just 27 putts.
“Yesterday, I was nervous. I tried too hard and pushed too hard,” said Choi, who held non-exempt status on Tour in 2006, but has stayed near the top of the leaderboard at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. “Last year, I didn't know how to play safe and went for every pin. This year I know how to play, hit the greens.”
Earlier in the day, Tina Miller carded the tournament's first hole-in-one. She played the Legends course and found herself between clubs while standing on the tee of the par-3, 130-yard third hole.
“I had a knock-down 7-iron, aimed left of hole and it faded right at it,” said Miller, who competed in 15 events on the Duramed Futures Tour in 2006, as well as in the 2005 U.S. Women's Open and Wendy's Championship for Children. “The ball landed right behind it (the flagstick) and rolled back into the hole. I've only had one other on a par-4 in member-guest tournament.
Miller ended the day with a 5-over-par 77, but had carded a 73-74-71 during the first three rounds to make the cut at 7-over-par 295.
The 90-hole tournament has been staged at LPGA International on the Champions and Legends courses, playing each twice before Saturday's cut to the top-70 and ties.
Consistent with the LPGA's history as being a true World Tour, the 137-player field features 54 international players from 21 countries outside the United States, as well as one player from Puerto Rico. South Korea is represented by the most international players with 16, followed by Canada (7), Sweden (5), Australia (4), England (2), France (2), Mexico (2), Scotland (2) and Taiwan (2). The remaining countries are Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, India, Ireland, Paraguay, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and Venezuela with one player each.
There is no shortage of homegrown talent either. Twenty-nine states are represented in the final qualifying tournament, with California leading the way with 17 entrants, followed by Florida with 12. Texas has five representatives, while Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio each has four. Minnesota, New York and Illinois each have three players in the field.

Park remains co-leader with Kim returning to top at LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament
Sometimes the unknown can be your greatest ally. In their first appearances at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, 18-year-old amateur In-Kyung Kim, and Angela Park, an 18-year-old professional, top the leaderboard on Friday with matching 8-under-par 208s.
Just 18 holes remain before the cut to top-70 and ties at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. With little to worry about regarding a cut line, Kim (67-73-68) and Park (70-67-71) are in prime position to secure one of 15 exempt cards for the 2007 LPGA Tour season.
After sharing the first-round lead with Hye Jung Choi at 5-under-par 67, Kim dropped to a tie for eighth after a second round 1-over-par 73 on the LPGA International Champions course. She reclaimed her share of the lead on Friday with the aid of 16 Greens In Regulation.
“Yesterday, I had bad shots. I played better today,” said Kim, who earned a spot on the Duramed Futures Tour via a win at the qualifying tournament in November. “I just am more focused on Legends course. It's more tight and the greens are smaller.”
Kim put together a pair of 34s on Friday with birdies on holes 2, 6, 10 and 14. Her 68 was the field low on either course, but said she felt she could have done better.
“I had really good shots on numbers 16 and 17, but they lipped out,” said Kim, who averages 250-yards off the tee. “I've been doing pretty well with my iron shots and driver.”
On the opposing Champions course, Park was battling windy conditions and overcame three bogeys in five holes on holes 11, 12 and 16to finish 34-37=71 (-1).
“The wind was blowing the opposite direction I was used to playing, which makes number one and two downwind, so that was nice,” said Park, who recorded seven top-10 finishes in 16 starts on the Duramed Futures Tour in 2006. “But the closing holes were all into wind, so I try not to think about that too much because we all know it's hard and you get a little bit more nervous.”
After birdies on 2, 7 and 10, she found her final sub-par on the par-5 16th, sticking her iron shot to five feet.
“I'm having fun out there. You can't be all about business because then you'll be too caught up and it will be too stressful. Just try to go out there and have fun,” she said. “Tomorrow is one of the courses I like more. I can visualize my shots better. I see it and I believe it more. I'm more comfortable on that course.”
The 90-hole tournament has been staged at LPGA International on the Champions and Legends courses, playing each twice before Saturday's cut to the top-70 and ties. Players were repaired for the third and fourth rounds based on the course they started on in the first round. The groups will play the opposite course on Saturday as they played Friday. After Sunday's final round, the top-15 finishers will earn exempt status for the 2007 Tour season, while the next 35 will earn conditional status.

Choi, Park lead after second round at LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament
Eighteen-year-old Angela Park and 2006 LPGA Tour rookie Hye Jung Choi are currently co-leaders after 36 holes at 7-under-par 137 on Thursday at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The 90-hole tournament is staged at LPGA International, where 138 players will play the Champions and Legends courses twice, hoping to be among the top-70 to advance to Sunday. After Sunday's final round, the top-15 finishers will earn exempt status for the 2007 Tour season, while the next 35 will earn conditional status.
Park (70-67=137, -7) shot a low-round 67 on Thursday to tie for the lead after coming into the round tied for 11th-place at 2-under-par 70. Park, who played on the Legends course, recorded six birdies to go along with just one bogey on the day. She made birdies on holes four and nine on the front nine to make the turn at 2-under for the day. On the back nine, she birdied the par-3, 12th hole, bogeyed the par-5, 14th hole and then made back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16. She closed out her round with a birdie on 18 to finish the day with a 5-under 67.
“I just played steady out there. I putted fine; I hit the ball pretty well. I think the key out there today was my ball striking,” said Park, who tied for 15th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship this year, one of four major championships on the LPGA Tour.
“I was pretty calm out there. I wasn't really thinking about what I was going to shoot. We all know there's three more days and anything could happen. I'm not really looking ahead, just trying to stay calm and, if you make a birdie, there's another hole to birdie.”
Park was a medalist at the 2005 U.S. Women's Public Links and a semifinalist at the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur. She turned professional in April and played on the Duramed Futures Tour this year, recording seven top-10 finishes in 16 starts. She finished third at the IOS Futures Golf Classic and tied for third at the Tuscson Duramed Futures Golf Classic.
“I've learned so much over the past year. I think this is the most I've learned for nine years; I think this is the year that adds it up,” said the 18-year-old from Torrance, Calif. “It's been a great experience going from amateur to professional. I've grown as a player and I want to keep that up.”
Choi, who played the Champions course, held on to her first-round lead after carding a second-round 70 on Thursday to move to 7-under (67-70=137) for the tournament.
“I didn't hit (the ball) very good today. I had a chance, but I didn't make it. I wanted to go to 10-under, but I was a little nervous,” said Choi, who carded four birdies against two bogeys. “I will be practicing more putting and keep focused and enjoy the day tomorrow.”
On the front nine, Choi recorded back-to-back birdies on holes four and five after sinking two-foot birdie putts. She bogeyed the par-4, seventh hole, but came back to birdie the ninth hole and made the turn at 2-under for the day. On the back nine, she bogeyed the par-5, 13th hole, but finished strong making a 15-foot birdie putt on 18 to finish with a 70.
Choi, who earned non-exempt status for the LPGA Tour at the 2005 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, played just two events this season, and her best finish was a tie for 21st at the Corona Morelia Championship in October. She also competed on the Duramed Futures Tour, where she won 2006 The Power of a Dream Futures Golf Classic and posted four other top-10s this year.
Choi leads a 58-strong contingent of LPGA Tour players in the field. Clarissa Childs is among them and just one stroke off the lead after carding a 4-under-par 68 in the second round to go to 70-68=138 (-6) for the tournament. Childs is looking to regain the exempt status she held during the 2003 season. She just missed out on exempt status last year as she tied for 22nd, but lost in a three-hole, seven-way playoff to earn one the final three exempt cards.
The players have been split between LPGA International Champions and Legends courses and will be repaired by scores for the third round based on the course they started on the first round. The new groups will play the third and fourth rounds together before the Saturday cut to the top-70 and ties.
Consistent with the LPGA's history as being a true World Tour, the 138-player field features 54 international players from 21 countries outside the United States, as well as one player from Puerto Rico. South Korea is represented by the most international players with 16, followed by Canada (7), Sweden (5), Australia (4), England (2), France (2), Mexico (2), Scotland (2) and Taiwan (2). Texas has five representatives, while Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio each has four. Minnesota, New York and Illinois each have three players in the field.

Kim, Choi take early lead
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Nov. 29, 2006 – Amateur In-Kyung Kim and 2006 LPGA Tour rookie Hye Jung Choi are co-leaders after 18 holes with matching 5-under-par 67s on Wednesday at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Kim, who has been playing golf since she was nine, has already earned a spot on the Duramed Futures Tour after winning the November qualifier. But now the 18-year-old has her sights set on the LPGA.
“I just want to play on the LPGA Tour,” said the 2005 U.S. Girls' Junior Champion. “I had 16 greens in regulation and putted pretty well. I had one three-putt and six birdies. I played really solid.”
On her front nine—the back nine of the Legends Course—Kim started the day with a birdie on 10 followed by two more on holes 13 and 17. A missed two-foot putt for par on the par-3 15th was her only hiccup of the day as she would more than compensate on her final nine holes with three consecutive birdies on holes three through five. “I like everything (about golf),” she said. “All of it is different. It isn't one round, it's each hole; the wind changes, everything can change on the next hole. I like making my own choices.”
Choi, who earned non-exempt status for the LPGA Tour at the 2005 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, played just two events this season and her best finish was a tie for 21st at the Corona Morelia Championship in October. On Wednesday, she took her first step toward retaining her Tour card with a bogey-free round and five birdies, including three on her first four holes.
“I'm just enjoying this. I had a strong finish and for the first day it was very important for me. I putted well, but my iron shots were very good today,” said the 21-year-old from South Korea. “It was very important for me to shoot low today because I was very nervous before the round today, but I feel comfortable now.”
Choi leads a 58-strong contingent of LPGA Tour players in the field. Erica Blasberg is among them and just one stroke off the lead with a 4-under-par 68. Blasberg earned more than $62,000 in 2006 for non-exempt status in 2007, but this week is her chance to earn the exempt card that has eluded her since she went through Q-School in 2004.
“I'm pretty relaxed. I have a pretty good mindset coming in here; whatever happens, happens. I've been here a couple times and have some experience,” said Blasberg, who has finished tied for 32nd and tied for 22nd in 2004 and 2005, respectively. “I had a good round, I only made one bogey, so I want to stay relaxed, keep giving myself chances and not putting any pressure on myself. Just play golf.”
Paige MacKenzie also got off to a strong start to join Blasberg in a three-way tie for third with Irene Cho. MacKenzie, who is best known in the golf world as a 23-year-old All-American from the University of Washington, is looking for a new title: LPGA Tour rookie. MacKenzie lost to Kim by one stroke at the Duramed Futures Tour Qualifier in November and is keeping the amateur in her sights this week.
“I had the usual adrenaline of a golf tournament, but I was amazingly relaxed out there, which was nice because that was my whole goal coming into this week. To try to keep in mind that this is just another event and that you just need to keep that same mentality and not try to do something different,” she said.
