Hill, Srisawang share medalist honors at second LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
35 players advance to finals in November.
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 6, 2006 – The second and last LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament is in the books, and for 35 players, the goal of LPGA Tour status in 2007 is within reach. Angie Hill of Canton, Ohio shot a tournament-low 66 and Nontaya Srisawang of Thailand shot 70 in Friday's final round to share medalist honors at 2-under-par 286 at the Venice LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Plantation Golf and Country Club. The magic number fell at 299 (+11) and 35 players from the sectional advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29-Dec. 3.
Hill (71-76-73-66), who turned professional on Monday, began the day tied for 12th place at 4-over-par. She made three birdies on the front nine on holes 2, 4 and 8 to turn at 1-over for the tournament. She sunk a 60-foot birdie putt on 2.
“That putt from one side of the green to the other on 2 really got my round going and I started thinking lets go low,” said Hill.
On the back nine she went to even-par with a birdie on 11 and went on to make back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 to move into the lead at 2-under. She made her only bogey of the day on 17, but came back with a birdie on the 18th hole to finish the day with a 6-under-par 66 and 2-under for the tournament.
“I just kept the ball below the hole and kept it in the right spots today,” said Hill. “Putting was definitely the key today. I think I had less than 26 putts today, which was good. Lately I've become a good putter. I've been working on it a lot lately.”
Hill, who started playing golf after her junior year in high school, was a three-year member of the College of Charleston women's golf team. The 23-year-old earned Southern Conference Player of the Year honors and was the medalist at the conference championship this year.
“The key was not to think too much out there. As inexperienced as I am, I knew I had to go out there and stay relaxed and focus on each shot. I took it one shot at a time and that is the biggest key. You can't get ahead of yourself.”
Srisawang (72-75-69-70) began the day tied for third place at even-par. She bogeyed the third hole to go to 1-over, but birdies on 8 and 9 helped her go to 1-under for the tournament at the turn. On the back nine, she bogeyed 10 to go back to even-par, but made back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 for a score of 2-under-par and a share of medalist honors.
“Today my tee shots not good. The second shots I could control onto the green and I made putts,” said the 18-year-old Srisawang.
“I am excited. I just wanted to make the cut and be in top-30. I hope I can do the same in the finals. I want to make the LPGA Tour because it was the first professional Tour for women.”
Srisawang, who graduated from high school this year, won the China Women's Open this year. She also won the Phuket Thailand Ladies Masters in 2005, as an amateur.
Tara Bateman of Chandler, Ariz., who led by one-shot going into the final round, shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to finish alone in third place at 1-under-par 287 (71-70-73-73). Bateman began the day with a double bogey on the first hole that brought her back to even-par. She had a quiet day the rest of the way as she only made one birdie on hole 8 to finish the tournament at 1-under.
“It went good out there, but I doubled the first hole. I had a chance for it, but I'm just glad I made it through. I would have liked the win, though,” said the 26-year-old Bateman. “My plan was to try to hit the middle of the greens and be below the hole and I did it, so I'm just very happy to get through.”
The first two days, players competed on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the cut was made to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes. The final two rounds were played on the 6,401-yard Bobcat Course. The top-30 players and ties after 72 holes advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29-Dec. 3.
The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2006. The first was at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., two weeks ago. The top-30 finishers and ties from each qualifier join current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.

Bateman holds one-shot lead at LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 5, 2006 – Tara Bateman of Chandler, Ariz., shot a 1-over-par 73 in Thursday's third round and holds a one-shot lead going into the final round at the Venice LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Plantation Golf and Country Club. For the second straight day, Bateman is one of only two players currently under-par for the tournament as she holds a one-shot lead over South Korean Hae-Jung Kim.
“I didn't hit the ball very well today, but I just managed I guess,” said Bateman. “I didn't want to blow up, so I just figured I would need to keep my score around par. I hit my driver well, but my irons were just not the same as they had been the last two days.”
Bateman began the day with pars on her first three holes before making a birdie on 4 to go to 4-under for the tournament, but fell back to 3-under with a bogey on 5. She birdied 7 to make the turn at 4-under. On her back nine, she bogeyed 12 but rebounded with a birdie on 16 to stay at 4-under. She finished, though, with back-to-back bogeys on her final two holes for the second straight day.
“I was very indecisive on 17. I was in between clubs and wasn't sure what I should do,” said the 26-year-old. “I went with a 3-wood and hit it into the bunker. I didn't hit a good second shot and it went into another bunker.
“On 18, I thought I could clear the bunkers, but hit my drive short right into a bunker again. I thought I had a good chip, but it just skidded on the green and I missed an 18-footer. So I just didn't finish well.”
A 2002 graduate of Baylor University, Bateman recorded 12 top-10 finishes as a member of the Baylor women's golf program. She was also the 2001 and 2002 Texas Women's Open Champion. She played on the Duramed Futures Tour for three seasons (2002-2004), with her best finish coming in 2005, when she tied for second place at the IOS Futures Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas. Bateman did not play on the Duramed Futures Tour during 2006 and instead was a caddie on the LPGA Tour.
Kim (72-71-72=215), who is the only other player under-par, carded an even-par 72 in the third round to stay at 1-under for the tournament and held on to her second place spot. The 20-year-old made two birdies and two bogeys on the day. Kim birdied 8 to go to 2-under, but bogeyed 9 to make the turn at even-par. On the back nine, Kim birdied 16 to go back to 2-under for the tournament, but also made bogey on the final hole to finish the day at 1-under.
Kitty Hwang of Ecuador (73-73-70) and Nontaya Srisawang of Thailand (72-75-69) are currently tied for third place at even-par 216. Srisawang, amateur Violeta Retamoza of Aguascalientes, Mexico and Angela Buzminski of Ontario, Canada each shot 69 on Thursday, which were the low rounds of the day.
The first two days, players competed on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the 36-hole cut was made. The final two rounds are played on the Bobcat Course and the top-30 players and ties at the end of 72 holes will advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29-Dec. 3.
The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2006. The first was at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., two weeks ago. The top-30 finishers and ties from each qualifier join current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15 th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.

Bateman takes two-shot lead at LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
Field cut to 73 players at 153 (+9)
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 4, 2006 – Tara Bateman of Chandler, Ariz., took a two-shot lead after shooting a 2-under-par 70 during Wednesday's second round of the Venice LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Plantation Golf and Country Club. Bateman is only one of two players currently under par for the tournament and is one of only seven players to post an under-par round after windy conditions in Venice on Wednesday. The dream of LPGA Tour status is still alive for 73 players who survived the 36-hole cut Wednesday, which fell at 153 (+9).
Bateman, who played on the Panther course, is currently at 3-under-par 141 (71-70) and holds a two-shot lead over South Korean Hae-Jung Kim.
“I really like the courses here. I knew Panther was the easier of the two so I was ready to go when I started this morning,” said Bateman. “I hit a lot of greens today and I made some putts.”
Bateman, who started on the back nine, began the day with a bogey on 10 to go to even-par for the tournament. She went on to make par on holes 11, 12 and 13 before making four-straight birdies on holes 14-17 to go to 4-under-par for the tournament. Bateman made the turn at 3-under after a bogey on 18.
“I was very anxious to start and that resulted in a bogey on my first hole, but I got into a groove after that and was hitting the ball really close to the hole,” said Bateman.
The 26-year-old continued to play solid as she birdied holes 4 and 7 to go to 5-under-par, but she three-putted her final two holes to make bogey on both and finish in the lead at 3-under.
“It is nice to have a cushion right now, but I need to keep the same routine and stay very calm and patient the rest of the week.”
“I had a successful season during 2005 on the Futures Tour and I was really disappointed with not making it to the Q-school finals. I caddied for Alena Sharp at the finals and was heartbroken that I was not playing there myself,” said Bateman. “I thought my course management was lacking at Q-school and I thought it would be good for me to caddie for a year, because I was a better caddie than a player at the time and I thought it would help my game.”
Kim, who is the only other player under-par, is currently alone in second place after carding 72-71=143 (-1). She had an up-and-down day as she recorded five birdies to go along with four bogeys.
Eun-Hee Ji, who was tied for the lead after the first round, is currently in third place at even-par 144 (69-75). Kim Augusta, who was also tied for the lead after the first round, shot an 8-over-par 80 on Wednesday and is currently tied for 30th place.
The first two days, players competed on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the 36-hole cut was made today. The final two rounds will be played on the Bobcat Course. The top-30 players and ties at the end of 72 holes will advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 29-Dec. 3.
The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2006. The first was at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., two weeks ago. Augusta, Ji lead LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament after opening-round 69
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 3, 2006 – Kim Augusta of Rumford, R.I., and Eun-Hee Ji of Seoul, South Korea each carded 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to take the first-round lead at the Venice LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Plantation Golf and Country Club. Augusta and Ji currently hold a one-shot lead over Courtney Erdman of Arcadia, Calif., Julie Tvede of Copenhagen, Denmark and Kim Welch of Sacramento, Calif., who all shot 2-under-par 70.
Augusta, who played on the Bobcat course during the first round, made back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 after starting her day on the back nine. She bogeyed 15, but pared 16, 17 and 18 to make the turn at 1-under. On her back nine Augusta fell to even-par when she bogeyed hole 1, but she made birdies on holes 2, 4 and 8 to finish the day at 3-under.
“Everything was going my way today,” said Augusta following her round. “I was driving the ball well and hitting my approach shots well and I was making putts. Even the putts I did not make for birdie were just three- or four-footers I made easily for par.”
Augusta, who missed qualifying for the LPGA Final Qualifying School at the first sectional by just two shots, has played five seasons on the LPGA Tour as a non-exempt player. She competed in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 an 2004.
“Getting back on Tour is harder than I ever thought it would be. I just need to continue doing what I did today, hitting fairways and greens and making putts,” said Augusta. “I struggled last year, but I had a good summer on the Duramed Futures Tour this year. I feel like I have all of my eggs in a basket and I'm ready to go.”
Augusta played in 19 events on the Duramed Futures Tour this season with her best finish coming at the Lakeland Duramed Futures Classic, where she tied for eighth.
Ji, who played on the Panther course during the first round, made three birdies (holes 4, 5 and 7) on the front nine to go along with one bogey to make the turn at 2-under. On the back nine, Ji birdied 12 to go to 3-under, but a bogey on the par 3, 15 th hole brought her back to 2-under. Ji birdied 17 to finish with a share of the lead at 3-under.
Erdman, who is currently tied for third place, recorded her first-ever hole-in-one on the Bobcat Course on Tuesday. Erdman aced the par 3, 152-yard 6 th hole with a 6-iron.
“My husband is my caddie and he helps me make all of my club selections. I was in between a 6-iron and a 5-iron and the wind was kind of picking up so we decided on the 6-iron instead. It hit just before the pin and just rolled and went right into the cup!” said Erdman of her ace.
Tara Bateman of Phoenix, Ariz., Angie Hill of Canton, Ohio, Yeon Joo Lee of Seoul, South Korea and Mo Martin of Altadena, Calif., are in a four-way tie for sixth place at 1-under-par 71.
Players are competing on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the 36-hole cut is made following the second round. The final two rounds, which will feature the low 70 players and ties, will be played on the Bobcat Course.
The top-30 finishers and ties from each qualifier join current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15 th on the final 2006 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
