Choi earns medalist honors at second and final LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
32 players advance to LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in December
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 3, 2008 - The second leg of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament is complete and 32 players are headed to Daytona Beach for the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. Chella Choi shot a 3-under-par 69 in Friday's final round to earn medalist honors at the Venice sectional at Plantation Golf and Country Club. She finished the week at 9-under-par (71-67-72-69=279), one-shot ahead of Beatriz Recari of Spain and Thailand's Nontaya Srisawang. The final cut came at 6-over-par 294.
Along with taking first-place in the second and final qualifier, Choi also carded her first-career ace on the sixth hole of the Bobcat Course. The South Korean used a 7-iron on the 146-yard, par-3. The ace motivated Choi the rest of the way. There are, however, things that can be worked on between now and Daytona Beach.
"I got lucky. My game wasn't there on the start, but the hole-in-one got me excited. I played better because of the ace, and it made me very happy," Choi said. "After I made the hole-in-one, I just wanted to win, which I did, so I am very happy. There will be a lot of great players in Daytona, so I definitely have some stuff to work on before I get there."
Choi finished the day with an ace, three birdies and two bogeys, and is excited about her upcoming trip to Daytona Beach, Fla. and the opportunity to earn membership on the 2009 LPGA Tour.
Along with the ace, the first-year professional credited competing on the Duramed FUTURES Tour as a learning opportunity. Choi joined the Duramed FUTURES Tour earlier this year, where her best finish was a tie for second-place at the Bright House Networks Open.
"I learned a lot from playing on the DFT this year," Choi said. "It was a good opportunity for me."
Recari and Srisawang, the pair who finished tied for runner-up honors, turned in 8-under-par 280 scorecards. Recari carded a 1-under-par 71 on the final day, bringing her four-day score to 8-under-par (69-69-71-71=280). This is the first attempt for LPGA Tour membership by the 21-year-old.
"I did really well today. Overall, I thought I played pretty well," Recari said. "I am happy; it has been a long week. There was just so much competition that I had to be pretty confident. My driver has been consistent, and my putting has been consistent too."
Srisawang (72-67-72-69=280), a third-year professional, finished the final round with five birdies and a pair of bogeys, in route to taking half of the runner-up spot.
Finishing in solo fourth place, but topping all other amateurs, Jaclyn Sweeney (71-68-70-72=281) was happy with how this week turned out. The Bradenton, Fla. native plans on working out any kinks before the final qualifier in Daytona Beach rolls around.
"I have some things to work on with my coach. I had good opportunities this week, but my distances were off just a bit," Sweeney said. "Overall, I am happy with my performance this week though."
The first two days, players competed on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the cut was made to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes. The final two rounds were played on the 6,488-yard Bobcat Course. The top-30 players and ties after 72 holes advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Dec. 3-7.
The Venice qualifier was the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2007. The first was at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., two weeks ago. The top-30 finishers and ties from each qualifier will now join current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2007 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
Final round scores Friday in the LPGA Tour's LPGA SECTIONAL QUALIFIER at the 6488-yard, par 36-36 - 72, Plantation Golf & Country Club, Bobcat Course. (a-denotes amateur): |

Recari, Sweeney lead after three rounds of LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 2, 2008 - Beatriz Recari and Jaclyn Sweeney share the lead after the third round of the second and final LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Venice, Fla. The pair owns a 7-under par 209 heading in to Friday's final-round action at the Plantation Golf and Country Club. Recari and Sweeney are two of only three players in the field who have turned in sub-par scores all three days.
Recari, of Spain, turned in a 1-under-par 71 on day three, bringing her three-day score to 7-under-par (69-69-71=209). The 21-year-old Recari is a three-year member of the Ladies European Tour (LET), with a pair of top-10 finishes in 2008, including a tie for third at the Finnair Ladies Masters. This is the first attempt for LPGA Tour membership by the fourth-year professional. She looks to continue her impressive play in the final round at Plantation Golf and Country Club.
"I thought I played well today," Recari said of her third round. "Hopefully I can play good again tomorrow, and finish strong."
Sweeney (71-68-70=209), one of seven amateurs to make the cut, equaled Recari's overall score (-7), and has put together three sub-par rounds. Playing consistently for most of the day, the 19-year-old double-bogeyed the final hole 18, bringing her third-round total to 2-under-par.
"I didn't finish strong today at all. I was struggling with my driver all day though," said the Bradenton, Fla. native. "I hope I can have another sub-par round tomorrow. I really want to just finish well. My goal coming in to this tournament was to win, and that is still my goal."
Sweeney, a 19-year-old graduate of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, did not think the wind was much of a factor this afternoon, despite seeing some gusty areas every now and then.
"Coming from Oklahoma, where we played our conference championship, the wind today was not much of a factor for my game," Sweeney said. "I have played in wind much worse than this before."
Chella Choi (71-67-72=210), who started playing golf at the age of 10, enters the final round in sole possession of third place. After remaining an even-par 72 on a sunny Thursday afternoon, Choi will start the final round at 6-under-par.
The 18-year-old is a member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour and has racked up four top-10 finishes in 2008, including a second-place showing at the Bright House Networks Open. In 2008, Choi finished 17th on the season-ending money list, with $23,086 in earnings. As an amateur, Choi was a member of the 2006 Korean National Second Team.
Nontaya Srisawang (72-67-72=211) of Thailand, South Korean Hae-Jung Kim (71-68-72=211), Janell Howland (70-70-71=211) of Boise, Idaho and Samantha Richdale (72-69-70=211) of British Columbia all share fourth place in the standings after three rounds of action.
The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2008. Players played both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club before the 36-hole cut was made. The final two rounds, featuring the low-70 players and ties, will be played on the Bobcat Course. The top-30 players and ties at the end of 72 holes will join the top-30 finishers from the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Dec. 3-7. There, the field will also be comprised of current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2008 Duramed FUTURES Tour money list.
Third-round scores Thursday in the LPGA Tour's LPGA SECTIONAL QUALIFIER at the 6488-yard, par 36-36 - 72 Plantation Golf & Country Club, Bobcat Course (a-denotes amateur): |

Choi, Recari lead after second round of LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament
72 players make cut, continue quest toward 2009 LPGA Tour membership
VENICE, Fla., Oct. 1, 2008 – Chella Choi and Beatriz Recari lead all players after the second round of the second and final LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Venice, Fla. Each own a 6-under par 138, heading in to Thursday's third-round action at the Plantation Golf and Country Club.
A native of South Korea, Choi (71-67) fired five birdies on the Bobcat Course, two on the front and three on the back nine. She credited the sub-par scores to the amount of confidence she was able to play with.
“On holes one through three, I had a good chance to make birdies, but missed my chances. After that, I played very well,” Choi said. “I had some good saves on the front nine, and that gave me confidence to play well. I felt good about it.”
The 18-year-old is a member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour, and racked up four top-10 finishes in 2008, including a second-place showing at the Bright House Networks Open. In 2008, Choi finished 17th on the season-ending money list, with $23,086 in earnings. As an amateur, Choi was a member of the 2006 Korean National Second Team. Overall, the first-year professional was happy with how she played today.
“I thought my shots were really good. I played pretty safe in my round today,” Choi added.
The other co-leader, Recari, of Spain, turned in a 3-under par 69 for the second day in a row. The 21-year-old Recari is a three-year member of the Ladies European Tour (LET), with a pair of top-10 finishes in 2008, including a tie for third place at the Finnair Ladies Masters.
A trio of players, Hae-Jung Kim (71-68), Nontaya Srisawang (72-67) and Jaclyn Sweeney (71-68), head into the third round tied for third at 5-under par 139.
The 22-year-old Kim is a member of the Korea LPGA (KLPGA), with her best finish a 12th-place showing at the 2007 China Ladies Open. After an opening-round 71 (-1), Kim turned in another sub-par score of 4-under-par 68.
Srisawang, a second-year member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour, shot a 5-under-par 67 in the second round on the Panther Course. The native of Thailand has played in four events on the Duramed FUTURES Tour this year, with a tie for 17th outing at the ILOVENY Championship as her best finish in 2008.
Sweeney, a local product from Bradenton, Fla., fired a 4-under-par 68 on the Panther Course of the Plantation Golf and Country Club. The 19-year-old is one of seven amateurs who made the cut, extending their chances of gaining membership on the 2009 LPGA Tour.
“I hit the ball really well today. I was able to finish strong, too,” Sweeney said. “It was a fun two rounds of golf so far, and I just want to play better and better in the next two rounds. My goal coming in to this tournament was to win, and that is still my goal. I am near the top of the leaderboard right now, so my goal is still to win.”
The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2008. Players played both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, before the 36-hole cut was made.
Second-round scores Wednesday in the LPGA Tour's LPGA SECTIONAL QUALIFIER at the 6488-yard, par 36-36 - 72 Plantation Golf & Country Club, Bobcat Course 6226-yard, par 36-36 - 72 Plantation Golf & Country Club, Panther Course (a-denotes amateur): Course Legend: B - Bobcat Course, P - Panther Course |

Chang, Oh lead LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament after opening-round 68s
VENICE, Fla., Sept. 30, 2008 – Moah Chang and Sunny Oh lead the field of 133 players after the opening round of the second and final LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Venice, Fla. Each carded a 4-under par 68 on the Panther Course of the Plantation Golf and Country Club.
A native of South Korea, Chang (32-36) is a three-year member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour, where her best finish in 2008 was a tie for eighth at the Alliance Bank Golf Classic in Syracuse, N.Y. Highlights of the 24-year-old's career include co-medalist honors at the 2005 Golden State Tournament, and a tie for third place at the 2002 Long Beach Championship, as an amateur. This is Chang's first appearance in a LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament.
Chang was pleased with her 4-under on the front nine, and hopes to continue that momentum in the second round on the Plantation Golf and Country Club's Bobcat Course.
“My day was good. My putting was really good today; I've been working a lot on that part of my game,” Chang said. “My shots were ok, but like I said, I think the putting was the main thing today. Hopefully I can play the same way tomorrow. I'm going to work on my putting, because that is my main thing right now. I've been struggling on my putting lately, so we will see how it goes.”
Fellow South Korean player Sunny Oh also fired a 4-under-par 68 (33-35) for a share of the lead. Oh earned her first professional victory on the Duramed FUTURES Tour at the 2008 Bright House Networks Open in Lakeland, Fla., earlier this year. While a member of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas golf team, Oh picked up five collegiate victories, including the 2004 Mountain West Conference (MWC) Championship, as well as the 2004 MWC Player of the Year honor.
“I played pretty good today. I had six birdies and just two bogeys. The bogeys were hard to make, so I was happy with that,” Oh said. “I made some good putts today. Tomorrow I will go in with the same routine, hitting the fairways and greens. It was a good day for me.”
Susan Nam (36-33) and Beatriz Recari (34-35) are tied for second, heading into Wednesday's second round, with 3-under-par 69 scorecards. Nam, a 2008 member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour, was just one stroke from her career-low (68). The 22-year-old played in a pair of events this year at the El Paso Golf Classic and Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Championship. A member of the University of Texas golf team, she earned Sun Belt All-Conference honors in 2006 and 2007.
Recari, of Spain, is a three-year member of the Ladies European Tour (LET), with a pair of top-10 finishes in 2008, including a tie for third place at the Finnair Ladies Masters.
The Venice qualifier is the second of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2008. Players are competing on both the Bobcat and Panther courses at Plantation Golf and Country Club, playing each of the courses once before the 36-hole cut is made following the second round. The final two rounds, which will feature the low-70 players and ties, will be played on the Bobcat Course.
First-round scores Tuesday in the LPGA Tour's LPGA SECTIONAL QUALIFIER at the 6488-yard, par 36-36 - 72 Plantation Golf & Country Club, Bobcat Course 6226-yard, par 36-36 - 72 Plantation Golf & Country Club, Panther Course (a-denotes amateur): Course Legend: B - Bobcat Course, P - Panther Course |
