1. The LPGA Foundation announces scholarship winners

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 31, 2009 - The LPGA Foundation has announced their annual scholarship award winners for 2009. Four high-school seniors were selected for three scholarships,which will go toward their collegiate tuition assistance this fall: Lauren Kuhn, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Jordan Redfield, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky., were the recipients of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship, while Alison Pease, of Glastonbury, Conn., and Nicole Mooberry, of Norfolk, Neb., will receive the Dinah Shore Scholarship and Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship, respectively. Criteria for each scholarship vary, but all candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, leadership in school and community activities and active participation on her high school or community golf team.

Dinah Shore Scholarship
Alison Pease, an honor's student at Glastonbury (Conn.) High School and captain of their girls' golf team, has been named the 2009 recipient of the $5,000 Dinah Shore Scholarship. Since 1994, the scholarship has been awarded to a female high school senior who has demonstrated academic achievement while participating in golf during high school. Given annually by The LPGA Foundation, the scholarship is named in honor of the late entertainer and honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame, Dinah Shore.

Pease's weighted GPA of 4.724 includes a straight-A report card during her high school career. Outside the classroom, she excelled in numerous extra-curricular activities, including being named a three-year letter-winner for the girls' golf team. On the course, she was named to the Central Connecticut Conference All-Academic Team and helped lead the team to an 11th-place showing at the Connecticut State Golf Tournament.

In addition to golf, Pease was captain of the varsity volleyball team, being named to the all-conference team. She also found time to be involved in the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), which won a state competition; National Honor Society; and served as a mentor for the Glastonbury High School Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. For her community service, Pease also earned membership to the Key Club. Her community service included being a role model for the D.A.R.E. program, serving on the Teen Advisory Board for the Welles Turner Memorial Library and volunteering for the Migrant Farm Workers Health Care Project. She also worked as a youth soccer referee for the Glastonbury Hartwell Soccer Club.

During her senior year, Pease was named a National Merit semi-finalist and selected for the Brown book award as the most outstanding Glastonbury High School English student. Looking ahead to her collegiate career, Pease intends to pursue a double major in biology and philosophy at Yale University.

The Dinah Shore Scholarship is granted annually to a female high school senior who is pursuing a college education, but will not be playing collegiate golf. To qualify for the Dinah Shore Scholarship, an applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; must have played in a minimum of 50 percent of her high school golf team's scheduled events or have regularly played golf for the past two years; must have demonstrated leadership skills and/or extraordinary community affairs work; and must have applied to and been accepted into an accredited undergraduate academic program.

Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship
The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship, valued at $1,250, has been awarded to Nicole Mooberry. The award - established in 2007 - is named after Meekins, a past LPGA Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP), and designated for a young woman from a recognized minority background.

Mooberry attended Norfolk Senior High School, competing on the varsity golf and varsity basketball squads all four years. Her senior year, she was selected captain of both teams. Her golf career has included being a four-time qualifier for the Class A Nebraska State Golf Tournament, never finishing lower than 11th with her best finish third place in 2008. She was also academic all-conference and all-state, thanks to her 4.02/4.0 GPA. At Norfolk Senior High School, she owns the record for most top-10 finishes (29) and lowest season average (78.6). She was a member of the NJGA North-South Junior Cup Team (2005-08) and recorded top-five finishes in the following events: Nebraska Girls Stroke Play and PGA Junior Championship (runner-up), Big "I" State Championship (third), USGA Junior Amateur (fourth) and won the NWAGA four-ball competition.

As well as being active in sports, Mooberry was involved in many extra-curricular activities. She was a three-year member of student council, Girls "N" Club, student leadership team and DECA. Mooberry also earned a four-year nod to the Principal's List All A's, while attending Norfolk Senior High School.

Mooberry, who has been accepted to Winthrop University where she will study environmental science, has further ambitions to obtain her Master's degree then attend law school to concentrate on environmental law.

The namesake of the scholarship, the late Phyllis Galloway Meekins, was a talented amateur golfer from 1950 to 1981, when she became a member of the LPGA T&CP. On that foundation, Meekins started PGM Golf Clinics, Inc., in 1973 for youth ages 7 to 18 years old, which has taught thousands of children life lessons through the game of golf.

Meekins was inducted into the National African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 1984 and was nominated for the 1993 LPGA Teacher of the Year. She was recognized by the National Golf Foundation (NGF) with the NGF Outstanding Service Award.

Marilynn Smith Scholarship
The 2009 recipients of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship are Lauren Kuhn, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Jordan Redfield, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky. Kuhn was a four-year member of the Weatherwax High School (Aberdeen) varsity golf team, including two years as the team captain and plans to attend Gonzaga University this fall. Redfield attended Beechwood High School (Ft. Mitchell), where she served as the varsity girls' golf team captain and accepted an offer to play collegiate golf at Georgetown University. This year marks the third time two scholarships were awarded, valued at $3,000 each.

Kuhn's success on her high school girls' golf team led to honors as a Wendy's High School Heisman national finalist, as well as being a four-year top-scholar athlete and all-league honoree. She qualified for the Washington State Golf Tournament for three years and to the league championship team for two years (2008-09). Kuhn also was recognized as the team's best putter for three years and set school records for best team and individual score.

When not on the links, Kuhn was involved in student government and was elected the senior class president. She was also president of the high school FBLA chapter and was elected secretary of the National Honor Society, and vice president of the FFA chapter. In 2006, she was recognized as a Washington State Outstanding Youth Volunteer. She was also was an all-state choir selection and voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by her classmates. Within the community, Kuhn won the 2008 Miss Grays Harbors Outstanding Teen, and gave her time via membership in the Sons of Norway, 7th Street Kids Theater Camps, United Methodist Church and Salvation Army. At Gonzaga University, Kuhn will pursue pre-dental studies and plans to attend the University of Washington for Dental School to become an orthodontist.

Redfield earned a spot on the Beechwood varsity girls' golf team as a seventh grader, qualifying for the Kentucky State Golf Tournament four years, winning the conference championship three times and being a two-time runner up at regionals. She has been successful in her national junior golf pursuits, recording top-five and top-10 finishes in events on the PGA Junior Series, as well in AJGA, FCWT and IJGT events.

Academically, Redfield excelled as an AP scholar (4.222 weighted GPA) and National Merit Commended Scholar. She was president of the National Junior Honor Society and vice president of National Honor Society and also participated in Latin Club and the JETS engineering competition. In the Ft. Mitchell community, Redfield founded the Tigers Helping Tigers tutoring program. She was also the chair of her church youth group's volunteer team. In her spare time, she enjoys classical study of piano, tutoring, literature, writing, and nutrition and fitness. She will attend Georgetown University in the fall, majoring in government with aspirations to later attend law school.

The Marilynn Smith Scholarship - named in honor of one of the LPGA's 13 founding members - recognizes two female high school seniors who are pursuing a college degree, while playing collegiate golf. Applicants for the Marilynn Smith Scholarship must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, demonstrate leadership skills and extraordinary community affairs work and participated in a minimum of 50 percent of a high school golf teams' scheduled events or played golf regularly for the past two years.

2. Race for the Cup

The U.S. and European Solheim Cup teams were announced by their respective captains on Sunday, thus setting the stage for the 11th biennial Solheim Cup. U.S. Captain Beth Daniel and her U.S. squad have arrived in Sugar Grove, Ill., to commence their final practice session this week at Rich Harvest Farms. Media are invited to the course on Wed., Aug. 5 to talk to Daniel and the team. It will be a valuable week for Daniel as she evaluates the team chemistry to determine the best pairings to go against European Captain Alison Nicholas and her team.

The Solheim Cup is a biennial, trans-Atlantic team match-play competition featuring the best U.S.-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and the best European members from the Ladies European Tour (LET). The U.S. Team leads the competition, 7-3, and has never lost The Solheim Cup on home soil.

4. Rolex Rankings move of the week

Earning the first major championship victory of her 15-year LPGA Tour career at the RICOH Women's British Open, Catriona Matthew entered the top-20 of this week's Rolex Rankings with a 50-spot jump. Matthew is now ranked 14th in the world, following her remarkable win at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England. Matthew, of Scotland, now has three LPGA Tour victories, with the first two coming at the 2001 Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open and the 2004 Wendy's Championship for Children.

Her win at the RICOH Women's British Open also secured her spot for the 2009 European Solheim Cup Team, making her fifth appearance in the biennial event. She will also be part of the 20-player field at the Samsung World Championship Sept. 17-20.

The Rolex Rankings are sanctioned by the five major women's professional golf tours: the LPGA; Ladies European Tour (LET); Ladies Professional Golfers' Association of Japan (LPGA of Japan); Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA); Australian Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG); as well as the Ladies Golf Union (LGU), which administers the RICOH Women's British Open. The Rolex Rankings are the only women's world rankings that incorporate player performances from the five major tours and the Duramed FUTURES Tour, the official developmental tour of the LPGA.

5. Pipeline to the LPGA Tour, August 2, 2009

Suh snags debut victory. Jenny Suh, of Fairfax, Va., won the Alliance Bank Golf Classic last week in Syracuse, N.Y. In a weather-delayed event that went into a playoff, Suh (68-65-68=201, -12) outlasted two-time Duramed FUTURES Tour winner Seo-Jae Lee, of South Korea, (67-66-68=201, -12) in a one-hole playoff on the East Course at Drumlins Country Club. Suh earned $14,000 for the win. Lee's runner-up check of $10,000 bumped her onto 10th on the Duramed FUTURES Tour money list.

The players finishing in the top 10 on the final 2009 Duramed FUTURES Tour money list will receive membership on to the 2010 LPGA Tour. Please see current standings below.

6. The LPGA Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP) membership is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year

With nearly 1,300 members, the LPGA T&CP are the largest membership of women golf professionals in the world, maintaining a standard of the "Best of the Best." Their talents and skills will be on-hand during the 50th anniversary celebration Aug. 17 to 23, which coincides with the biennial Solheim Cup. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn and interact with some of the LPGA T&CP Founders and top teachers in the nation.

An unprecedented six days of a Front Row Experience are scheduled on the driving range of the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course - site of the 11th Solheim Cup. Fans are encouraged to not only watch the players as they practice, but step up and receive a free lesson from a LPGA T&CP member. 7. Scotland's Catriona Matthew wins RICOH Women's British Open

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, Lancashire, England, Aug. 2, 2009 - Catriona Matthew became the first-ever Scottish LPGA major championship winner at the RICOH Women's British Open. The 39-year-old mother of two carded a 3-under-par 285 (74-67-71-73) to record a three-stroke victory over Karrie Webb (77-71-72-68=288, even) at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club. The victory is Matthew's first major title and third-career LPGA Tour win.

"Coming up the last hole was a feeling I don't think I've ever had before. Just a tear in my eye trying to hold myself together for the last two putts," Matthew said, acknowledging the support she received from the fans throughout the week. "It's just … it really has not sunk in yet."

Matthew's day did not look promising through 10 holes following bogies on holes one, three and 10, but she turned everything around with three consecutive birdies on 13 through 15. Another bogey at 17 was a non-factor as the Scot already had the victory sealed. Matthew survived Sunday runs by a number of players, including LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls of Fame member Webb, who snuck into solo second place with a final-round 4-under-par 68. Paula Creamer (74-74-70-71=289, +1) - still searching for her first major championship title - was within striking distance, but a double bogey on 18 ended her chances of taking home a victory, as she tied for third with Hee-Won Han (77-73-69-70), Ai Miyazato (75-71-70-73) and U.S. Solheim Cup teammate Christina Kim (73-71-71-74).

Matthew's victory is even more impressive considering that she gave birth to her second daughter, Sophie, just 11 weeks ago, and this week marked just her second LPGA Tour event since. The Scot is the first RICOH Women's British Open winner from the United Kingdom since Karen Stupples won the event in 2004. With the victory, she takes home $335,000.

8. Webb, Miyazato cross earnings milestones

With her second place finish and $210,000 payday at the RICOH Women's British Open, LPGA Tour and World Golf Hall of Fame member Karrie Webb (77-71-72-68=288, even) became only the second player in LPGA Tour history to cross the $15 million mark in career earnings. Webb's tally of $15,065,471 is second only to fellow Halls of Fame member Annika Sorenstam ($22,573,192).

Also, 2009 Evian Masters champion Ai Miyazato (75-71-70-73=289, +1) crossed the $1 million mark in season earnings for the first time in her career. Tying her best LPGA career finish in a major championship last week with a tie for third at the RICOH Women's British Open, Miyzato earned $109,500 and is now fourth on the 2009 LPGA Official Money List with $1,030,900.

9. Jang cards final-round hole-in-one

Jeong Jang started her day off on the right foot with a hole-in-one on the 191-yard, par-3 first hole on Sunday at the RICOH Women's British Open. The 2005 British Open champion used a 4-hybrid to record her second-career LPGA ace. The 29-year-old finished the week tied for 25th at 8-over-par 296 (79-73-72-72).

On Friday, eventual RICOH Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew (74-67-71-73=285, -3) became the 17th person in LPGA Tour history to card back-to-back eagles. The 39-year-old eagled the par-5 11th hole and then aced the 154-yard par-3 12th hole with an 8-iron for her third career LPGA hole-in-one. In doing so, Matthew became just the fourth person in LPGA Tour history to record back-to-back eagles with a hole-in-one included.

Both aces triggered pledges of 1000 trees to be planted as part of the Ricoh GIFT (Green Initiatives For Tomorrow) program. Last week, one tree was planted for every birdie, five for every eagle and 1000 for every hole-in-one or albatross for a total of 3,012 trees.

10. Matthew qualifies for Samsung World Championship

Catriona Matthew secured her place in the Samsung World Championship field after winning the RICOH Women's British Open, the final major of the LPGA Tour season. Matthew joins Eun-Hee Ji (U.S. Women's Open), rookie Anna Nordqvist (McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola), Brittany Lincicome (Kraft Nabisco Championship), Paula Creamer (defending champion) and Lorena Ochoa (2008 Vare Trophy winner), all of whom have already qualified to play in the elite 20-player field at the Samsung World Championship.

11. Matthew earns stay at Canyon Ranch

Catriona Matthew celebrated her victory at the 2009 RICOH Women's British Open with a trophy and received an all-inclusive stay for two at a Canyon Ranch resort. In a combined effort to promote health and overall well-being among Tour players, Canyon Ranch will provide every winner of an LPGA event with one all-inclusive stay at one of Canyon Ranch's two destination resorts.

12. Lammrish renews certification

John Lammrish, director of golf maintenance at LPGA International - home of the annual LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament - in Daytona Beach, Fla., has completed the renewal process for maintaining his status as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). A 21-year GCSAA member, Lammrish is one of approximately 1,800 golf course superintendants worldwide who hold the CGCS status. To fulfill certification renewal requirements, a candidate must participate in 150 hours of continuing education and professional development.
