HAMMOND, Ind., June 28, 2009 - Going into today's final round of the $100,000 Horseshoe Casino Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Course, the talk was in order to win, you had to go low. The weather, however, had another idea. Gusty winds, at times reaching 30 mph, took over and players struggled, with no one scoring under par for the day. By rounds end, Jean Reynolds, of Newnan, Ga., shot 1-over-par and claimed the victory.
"I'm 100 percent glad to be done because the wind just kind of beats you down," said Reynolds, a second-year professional who carded a final-round one-over-par score of 73 to finish with a total score of 213 (-3). "The course played completely different than it did for the past two days. I just had to remember not to get frustrated. Pars were good today."
While Reynolds made plenty of pars, she started her day off with a birdie and ended with a bogey, with two more bogeys and one birdie in-between.
"Number 1 has been my favorite hole all week, said Reynolds. I've birdied it every day. Eighteen is a long hole. A bogey's not bad there. It plays like a par 5."
Reynolds said she did start to get a little frustrated after she bogeyed No. 15; however, she took a quick look around and started to relax.
"I looked over at the leaderboard after 15, and saw that I was winning," recalls Reynolds. "I just started to chill out a little after that."
With today's victory, Reynolds is now a two-time Duramed FUTURES Tour tournament champion, having already won March's Florida's Natural Growers Charity Classic in Winter Haven, Fla.
"It's going to take about a month to set in," said Reynolds, who is competing in the U.S. Women's Open in two weeks. "I'm going to take a quick break first. I'm going home to Georgia to see the Atlanta Braves play, and I'm seeing [pop singer] Beyonce."
Second-round leader Misun Cho (79) of Cheongju, South Korea and Pornanong Phatlum of Chaiyaphum, Thailand finished in a tie for 2nd at 214 (-2).
"It was a tough day," said Cho, winner of this year's iMPACT Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. "I just didn't manage to hang in there."
Cho carded five bogeys and one double-bogey for the round.
"I shouldn't have made bogeys on 13 and 14," said Cho. "Number 13 was way too long and I didn't let myself get up and down. And on the 14th, it was just a stupid putt. I wasn't that far away."
Phatlum, who advanced from a tie for 11th in the second-round, was happy to maintain a good score in today's winds.
"It was very, very windy," said Phatlum, a current member of the LPGA Tour. "So I just tried to concentrate on my game rather than my score."
Sharing a tie for fourth, at even-par (216), are Janell Howland (77) of Boise, Idaho, and Mina Harigae (79) of Monterey, Calif.
Danah Ford (73) of Indianapolis, and Samantha Richdale (76) of Kelowna, British Columbia ended the day tied for sixth at 1-over-par (217).
With today's win, Reynolds moves up to the No. 1 position in the Duramed FUTURES Tour money list. Harigae slips down one spot to No. 2, and Cho remains at third.
Next stop for the Duramed FUTURES Tour will be the ING New England Classic in Bloomfield, Conn., set for July 17-19.
