DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 31, 2009 - The LPGA Foundation has announced their annual scholarship award winners for 2009. Four high-school seniors were selected for three scholarships,which will go toward their collegiate tuition assistance this fall: Lauren Kuhn, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Jordan Redfield, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky., were the recipients of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship, while Alison Pease, of Glastonbury, Conn., and Nicole Mooberry, of Norfolk, Neb., will receive the Dinah Shore Scholarship and Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship, respectively. Criteria for each scholarship vary, but all candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, leadership in school and community activities and active participation on her high school or community golf team.

Dinah Shore Scholarship
Alison Pease, an honor's student at Glastonbury (Conn.) High School and captain of their girls' golf team, has been named the 2009 recipient of the $5,000 Dinah Shore Scholarship. Since 1994, the scholarship has been awarded to a female high school senior who has demonstrated academic achievement while participating in golf during high school. Given annually by The LPGA Foundation, the scholarship is named in honor of the late entertainer and honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame, Dinah Shore.

Pease's weighted GPA of 4.724 includes a straight-A report card during her high school career. Outside the classroom, she excelled in numerous extra-curricular activities, including being named a three-year letter-winner for the girls' golf team. On the course, she was named to the Central Connecticut Conference All-Academic Team and helped lead the team to an 11th-place showing at the Connecticut State Golf Tournament.

In addition to golf, Pease was captain of the varsity volleyball team, being named to the all-conference team. She also found time to be involved in the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), which won a state competition; National Honor Society; and served as a mentor for the Glastonbury High School Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. For her community service, Pease also earned membership to the Key Club. Her community service included being a role model for the D.A.R.E. program, serving on the Teen Advisory Board for the Welles Turner Memorial Library and volunteering for the Migrant Farm Workers Health Care Project. She also worked as a youth soccer referee for the Glastonbury Hartwell Soccer Club.

During her senior year, Pease was named a National Merit semi-finalist and selected for the Brown book award as the most outstanding Glastonbury High School English student. Looking ahead to her collegiate career, Pease intends to pursue a double major in biology and philosophy at Yale University.

The Dinah Shore Scholarship is granted annually to a female high school senior who is pursuing a college education, but will not be playing collegiate golf. To qualify for the Dinah Shore Scholarship, an applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; must have played in a minimum of 50 percent of her high school golf team's scheduled events or have regularly played golf for the past two years; must have demonstrated leadership skills and/or extraordinary community affairs work; and must have applied to and been accepted into an accredited undergraduate academic program.

Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship
The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship, valued at $1,250, has been awarded to Nicole Mooberry. The award - established in 2007 - is named after Meekins, a past LPGA Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP), and designated for a young woman from a recognized minority background.

Mooberry attended Norfolk Senior High School, competing on the varsity golf and varsity basketball squads all four years. Her senior year, she was selected captain of both teams. Her golf career has included being a four-time qualifier for the Class A Nebraska State Golf Tournament, never finishing lower than 11th with her best finish third place in 2008. She was also academic all-conference and all-state, thanks to her 4.02/4.0 GPA. At Norfolk Senior High School, she owns the record for most top-10 finishes (29) and lowest season average (78.6). She was a member of the NJGA North-South Junior Cup Team (2005-08) and recorded top-five finishes in the following events: Nebraska Girls Stroke Play and PGA Junior Championship (runner-up), Big "I" State Championship (third), USGA Junior Amateur (fourth) and won the NWAGA four-ball competition.

As well as being active in sports, Mooberry was involved in many extra-curricular activities. She was a three-year member of student council, Girls "N" Club, student leadership team and DECA. Mooberry also earned a four-year nod to the Principal's List All A's, while attending Norfolk Senior High School.

Mooberry, who has been accepted to Winthrop University where she will study environmental science, has further ambitions to obtain her Master's degree then attend law school to concentrate on environmental law.

The namesake of the scholarship, the late Phyllis Galloway Meekins, was a talented amateur golfer from 1950 to 1981, when she became a member of the LPGA T&CP. On that foundation, Meekins started PGM Golf Clinics, Inc., in 1973 for youth ages 7 to 18 years old, which has taught thousands of children life lessons through the game of golf.

Meekins was inducted into the National African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 1984 and was nominated for the 1993 LPGA Teacher of the Year. She was recognized by the National Golf Foundation (NGF) with the NGF Outstanding Service Award.

Marilynn Smith Scholarship
The 2009 recipients of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship are Lauren Kuhn, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Jordan Redfield, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky. Kuhn was a four-year member of the Weatherwax High School (Aberdeen) varsity golf team, including two years as the team captain and plans to attend Gonzaga University this fall. Redfield attended Beechwood High School (Ft. Mitchell), where she served as the varsity girls' golf team captain and accepted an offer to play collegiate golf at Georgetown University. This year marks the third time two scholarships were awarded, valued at $3,000 each.

Kuhn's success on her high school girls' golf team led to honors as a Wendy's High School Heisman national finalist, as well as being a four-year top-scholar athlete and all-league honoree. She qualified for the Washington State Golf Tournament for three years and to the league championship team for two years (2008-09). Kuhn also was recognized as the team's best putter for three years and set school records for best team and individual score.

When not on the links, Kuhn was involved in student government and was elected the senior class president. She was also president of the high school FBLA chapter and was elected secretary of the National Honor Society, and vice president of the FFA chapter. In 2006, she was recognized as a Washington State Outstanding Youth Volunteer. She was also was an all-state choir selection and voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by her classmates. Within the community, Kuhn won the 2008 Miss Grays Harbors Outstanding Teen, and gave her time via membership in the Sons of Norway, 7th Street Kids Theater Camps, United Methodist Church and Salvation Army. At Gonzaga University, Kuhn will pursue pre-dental studies and plans to attend the University of Washington for Dental School to become an orthodontist.

Redfield earned a spot on the Beechwood varsity girls' golf team as a seventh grader, qualifying for the Kentucky State Golf Tournament four years, winning the conference championship three times and being a two-time runner up at regionals. She has been successful in her national junior golf pursuits, recording top-five and top-10 finishes in events on the PGA Junior Series, as well in AJGA, FCWT and IJGT events.

Academically, Redfield excelled as an AP scholar (4.222 weighted GPA) and National Merit Commended Scholar. She was president of the National Junior Honor Society and vice president of National Honor Society and also participated in Latin Club and the JETS engineering competition. In the Ft. Mitchell community, Redfield founded the Tigers Helping Tigers tutoring program. She was also the chair of her church youth group's volunteer team. In her spare time, she enjoys classical study of piano, tutoring, literature, writing, and nutrition and fitness. She will attend Georgetown University in the fall, majoring in government with aspirations to later attend law school.

The Marilynn Smith Scholarship - named in honor of one of the LPGA's 13 founding members - recognizes two female high school seniors who are pursuing a college degree, while playing collegiate golf. Applicants for the Marilynn Smith Scholarship must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, demonstrate leadership skills and extraordinary community affairs work and participated in a minimum of 50 percent of a high school golf teams' scheduled events or played golf regularly for the past two years.
