DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Nov. 8, 2014 – Local favorite Meg Mallon gave golf fans something to cheer about when she took the opening-round lead today at the LPGA Legends Tour’s Walgreens Charity Championship presented by The Seagate Country Club.

Mallon, who lives in Delray Beach, carded a first-round score of 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead over Danielle Ammaccapane of Los Angeles, at 2-under 70.

Mallon was paired in today’s first round with good friend Juli Inkster, making her Legends Tour debut in stroke play. Both players recorded birdies on the first hole and both were two under after four holes. Mallon collected a third birdie on No. 6 to make the nine-hole turn at 3-under 33.

“I was thinking this was a nice start and let’s just go from here,” said Mallon, an 18-time LPGA Tour winner who is sleeping in her own bed this week. “I didn’t get ahead of myself and that’s why I continued to play well.”

Inkster bogeyed No. 9 to turn at one-under 35, but battled back with birdies on holes 10 and 11. Struggling for much of the round with a balky putter, the Californian stumbled, however, with bogeys on Nos. 15 and 17. She finished at one-under 71.

Mallon also birdied No. 10, bogeyed Nos. 15 and 17, but drained a timely birdie putt from 15 feet on the 18th green for the tournament lead.

“I didn’t think I had made that last putt, but fortunately, I did,” said Mallon, still seeking her first win on The Legends Tour, the LPGA’s official senior tour. “It was nice to end that way with a birdie.”

Joining Inkster at one-under 71 after the first round is Legends Tour rookie Pat Hurst, Jenny Lidback, Alicia Dibos and Marilyn Lovander.
